    hi, please can anyone help??im stressing out because the exams are tomorrow
    what is the function of the moderator, and the control rods in a reactor, and what matrials are used for them?
    i think graphite has something to do with it, but im not sure

    And i know that the shielding is made of concrete, but what effect does it have on gamma radiation and neutrons?

    thanx

    -moderator made of graphite is used to slow fast neutrons down quickly - faster neutrons get absorbed by U238 and don't cause further fission. U235 causes the chain reaction
    -control rods fully absorb neutrons to reduce the number of neutrons flying around. usually made of boron or cadmium
    -shielding absorbs neutrons and reduces the intensity of gamma rays. you wont be expected to know how.

    another quick question,
    the mass of the nuclear fuel in a reactor decreases at a rate of 1.2 x 105kg per hour, what is the power output of the reactor, assuming 100% efficiency.

    how would i calculate this? would i use E=mc2?

    its a multiple choice question

    1.2 x 10]-5 kg per hour = 3.33 x 10 (-5)kg per second
    E=(3.33 x 10 (-5))C squared
    E=300MW
