If you're referring to Rachelmarie's post, no I did not write an objection to that.
She only made that point in response to the point made by andyguyuk...

And I didn't post any objection to that point either.
Not very consistent then are you?

    That's abhorrent.
Thank God you don't represent the majority of the UK.
i think if you took a random sample of brits off the street and offered them a chance of using money for a) improvements to their own lives or those of their friends and family or b) another handout to africa, the vast majority will go for A.

The problem is, he does. You should get out more. Most people couldn't give a **** what happens in Africa.

Are you suggesting that Geldoff is receiving a subsidy from the G8 nations?
I'm sure he'll profit handsomely somewhere along the line. Then (if we're lucky) he'll go back to sleep for another 20 years.

No, it's just that I think being openly discriminating is morally wrong - freedom of speech has its limitations. I could expect that from proud America, but not Britain. Do not refer to Africans as "they" as they are all very different. Mugabi spends all the money on weapons, armies, bombs... jewelry, **** whatever - But Mandela is very helpful and DEFINATELY make a difference. Africa is not a country, it is made up of countries and one should be aware of their different views- though to many they are just all foreigners. Aid helps. Aid REALLY helps. Believe me.
Belive it or not mandela is not that good of a politician, he spent millons on an international airport which usally has more cleaners than passengers.

to be honest, id prefer to have a britain where no-one is forced to pull their own teeth out with pliars because there is no dentists, for example. id prefer to have streets that arent swimming in vomit and other interesting fluids on a weekend. i'd prefer to have hospitals are are opening and clean, not capitulating and so dirty you can smell it. those are issues to ME. some kids in africa arent.
Its hard for me to understand how people do not think that, as human beings it is their duty to help. "concentrate on your own country"??? I'm glad you agree that this is a horrific attitude.

It certainly does. It helps failed musicians like Geldoff line his pockets on the back of everybody else's gullibility.
    Failed Musicians????!!!
BONO IS AN INTERNATIONAL ROCK STAR for god's sake! And I have got every single one of the Boomtown rats' albums. Good grief!!!

    perhaps 0.1% of the population?

it certainly wont be anywhere even remotely need "most" people.

i dunno about you lot, but if im being honest, i cant say the woes of africa have ever kept me awake at night, or made me refuse my dinner because its not right for me to eat while some poor sod starves somewhere else.

Hey, how can you say that? You're the one who's asleep! Bob Geldof is a lovely person and only has his grand status because has the majority of the world supporting him - even if they don't know it.

Let's see how many people turn up/tune in for Live 8, then.
More importantly, let's see what sort of people turn up.

    Students.
    Wooly headed academics.
The beautiful people (ie "the stars").
    Some Churchy folks.
The Social worker brigade (everybody that gets their jobs from the Observer)
Some militant political parties (I'm sure Socialist Worker rentacrowd)
    Union members (NUT folks)
Exteme left politicians (the normal crowd...Livingstone types)
    The Chelsea Dinner Party Set
A few token politicians from both benches

In short, a very very very small section of British society is interested in this issue; a noisy minority.

Go down the Bricklayers Arms and ask the guys that have just come off the construction sites if they're interested in saving Africa?

yeh thats only because of a small capacity, but just because people dont go to a concert it doesnt mean they dont support helping developing countries. Your argument isnt very good, as even though people will say they would rather have better hospitals etc they also realise what good facilities we have and dont object to helping those in need.

nor have I, as that would be completely pointless.

But I also have never said/thought I don't give a **** about Africa, and plan to do what I can.

Ahem... is there another good way of sending aid, militants, workers, good and imports etc? I went to egypt on holiday and it was fantastic - stupid, proud - "I love my country but it don't love me" git.

That's why I didn't mention Bono. The last decent song Geldoff managed was "I don't like Mondays" back in the late 70's. In fact, I'm bloody hard pressed to think of anything else he did. Nothing comes to mind.
