For the best value, check out NSP boards. They are bulk made instead of custom, and are manufactured from slightly different materials. Because of this they are lot cheaper, but really, really good for beginners because they are stronger, i.e. can be battered about and not snap, like a custom board is more likely to do. Also, because mini-mals are like gold dust to buy second hand, they hold their value really well, so when you decide to upgrade to a smaller board, you shouldn't have lost too much of the money you paid out in the first place on the board. Go into your local surf shop and talk to someone who is actually an experienced surfer, they should tell you to buy a mini-mal because you get better buoyancy and can get into the wave easier, which is what you need to be doing to progress. Don't let them sell you anything below about 7' because you will get really frustrated in the surf and won't progress, and therefore the board will be a total waste of money!
