    Because it's broken.

    If it's a CRT television (I think that's what they called. The 'normal' tellies that aren't flatscreen or LCD etc.) then hit it on the top. It happens with old CRT PC monitors.

    Right, in that case, take a look at he cables around the back.

    Older Tv's (the 'big box' style, not the slim-line new styles) are connected to external devices i.e VCR's, DVD players and sky/virgin/freeview boxes by something called a SCART lead.

    Check that it hasn't been knocked out of kilt. It looks like a slightly large, rectangular attatchment with a cable coming out of the end of it. One end sits in the backside of the TV, the other end in the back of the box.

    Normally, if they've been knocked out or not fully in, the picture goes red, green or blue.
