Conscription is ridiculous. Especially in peaceful times, if you are a member of NATO...and you have a democratic rulership and live in a considerably peaceful region.

Conscription is a waste of time....most people only learn how to dig ditches, peel potatos and throw stones, as someone pointed out anyway...One trained soldier from a paid army is better than a bunch of conscription kids...as kids they are: in communist Bulgaria the conscription used to last for 2 years (bloody hell). Nowadays it's only six months. Question being: have today's people become 1.5 times smarter and better than the people from 70's? I don't think so. It's just that someone started to realise that the whole idea is flawed in may ways.

Did you leave due to Chechnya-related problems? Or did you win a visa?

    London is the best country?

Economic freedom but Old fashioned social values.
I'm acutally revising the whole period for an exam on monday so i know my stuff on Thatcher thank you very much
How do you value economic freedom if you don't want to allow people to make economic decisions for themselves?

    Yes.
'Tisn't about the quality of soldier people on national service would make, it's about the quality of person they would become.

Dad got a work visa. We are "good" economic immigrants.
Yes, I am a firm believer in the idea of building a giant moat around the m25 to keep the northerners out.

How does digging ditches and being able to strip a rifle make you a better person?

Even if the cost was to make Britain a second-rate country in Europe? Less prosperous than Germany and France?

How cynical can you get! National service would instill independence, discipline and respect.

Congrats. Why Britain and not America or Canada? Is it easier to get a visa?

Don't forget to leave it open for us Yanks.

Independence from whom? Surely not the government whom you'll have no choice but to serve for several years.

What if adult British citizens don't want to have independence, discipline and respect to be forced onto them?

Yeah, I think my dad got through on some scheme ran by the government to help find workers for companies that couldn't find English people skilled enough.

Don't forget to leave it open for us Yanks.
Of course, we get loads of American tourism, gives us more people to moan about.
