Was walking home at about half one after a takeaway and heard a woman screaming very loudly ... saw her shouting at a man and was worried she had been attacked previously. I rang 999 but then quickly decided to hang up as I saw the woman walking away from the incident so thought she was ok. Though she walked home with another man in tears.

About ten minutes later, my phone rang and the number was with held. I didn't accept the call. Do emergency services ring back?

Yes they normally do ring back if you hang up just to make sure you werent forced to hang up. If this ever happens in future just stay on the line till you reach the police and explain the situation so atleast they can log the area incase it happens again with a few minutes.

Yes, they do, they figure that it might have been a call cut short by accident and so phone back to try and work out whether there was a real need for them.

It will have been them phoning back as mentioned above, but dont worry about it you wont get into trouble. I expect people accidently call 999 when their phone is in their pocket or something all the time.

Oh right. Thanks. I will stay on the line next time if I need to. There are usually a lot of police patrolling the town centre at night and I doubt I was the only person who rang the police so hopefully they've worked it out.

    Will they ring again?
