A school has been fined £16,500 after a 16-year-old pupil lost eight fingers when her hands got stuck in a bucket of plaster of Paris during an art lesson.

The girl was making a cast of her hands in January 2007, magistrates in Boston, Lincolnshire, were told.

The plaster heated up and set. Neither staff nor paramedics could get it off, leaving the pupil at Giles School in Boston with serious burns.

Wow, that is horrific.

Poor girl. I read about this earlier... Surely the teachers would have told her it is a BIG mistake to put your hands in that plaster stuff? :| It's just such a failure on their part.

pretty sure if my fingers were burning, i'd shout at someone to get a sledge hammer and crack it open... not just stand there, or plunge the whole thing into water, although well that might make it worse

^ Yeah, I don't get why they didn't smash up the bucket as soon as they realised. It was ten minutes ...

And I can't believe anyone would say she deserved to lose eight fingers and go through agony just because she made a simple mistake.

Bloody hell . . .

See kids, this is why we have Health & Safety legislation. It totally sucks, though. Medical prosthetics are coming quite far though - I know it's terrible but if she can endure for maybe ten years or so, they will probably be able to give her robotic fingers that at least restore some function.

She disobeyed instructions to make a clay mould and then fill that in with plaster of Paris.

What an idiot. What did the girl think would happen when the plaster set around her hands?
