I don't get it; how do the contestants on this programme know the answers?! Half the time time i'm not even listening to the host.

Tell me, do these contestants revise for this quiz show?

I think they all suck Paxo's **** before the show. Whoever gives the best performance wins the game!

Yes, they probably have societies and several rounds of selection processes.

I know someone who's on it this year, he says he doesn't revise for it...

Some of the questions are related to the degrees that the contestants are studying. There's a few UC contestants on TSR...

Well you won't get them right if you don't listen...

I watched it for the first time the other week. I got about 4 right, I was so chuffed. It's quite a funny show.

Still prefer the Young Ones version though...

I always thought that the producers and what not looked at what the contestants are studying and ask them related questions cuz for a lot of them I'm just like WTF?! Although some of the science ones are ridiculously easy.

I do a little bit of practice but no revision. Whether the producers set questions based on the people's specialism i don't know, but it doesn't seem that way.

There was a mistake on tonight's episode, in the first picture round. The guy gave the correct answer (Audi R10) and Jeremy had Audi R8 on his card.

I didn't know that they asked qus related to their degrees, I thought it was just random! Last weeks, there were an awful lot of Biology based qus, yet the only scientist on it did Physics... ??

Was very proud of our team last week, woo!

That made me burst out laughing! I mean, I love Paxman an' all, but still... he's a bit of an arrogant twit.

It's not the sort of thing you can revise for really, as the questions can be on anything. Not to mention the fact that these students do have degrees to be getting on with!

I generally find that the science ones (apart from some of the obscure Maths/Physics stuff) are incredibly easy, while the literature/history/classics ones are much harder, comparatively. This is probably not helped by my being predominantly a scientist, but the artsy side of my family (yes, we do have our own geeky UC competitions) think they're harder too. I don't think they pick questions particularly for the degree courses that people are doing.

I agree. I think this because the arts are more accessible and so they can plumb the depths a bit more. As an Engineer i could have read a lot of literature books. The inverse is less likely if you do Lit. I wouldn't expect an arts student to open a Fluid Mechanics book. This can make guessing the science ones hard if no one on your team knows.

You pick a range of subjects studied in your team and they are obviously knowledgeable people anyway..

Yes, although the amount of knowledge of classical literature or art history expected is generally higher than, say, anatomy (though the solar plexus one tonight did confuse me a bit!)

Whilst a top notch show, university challenge is completely biased. I read recently (and watching the show would back this up) that whilst 2/3rd of the university population do some form of hard or soft science, rather than an art, the ratio of art and literature questions to science questions is the other way round.

My top score is 16 in one show, however if I was a classicist... every second question is who wrote this or who said this or what does this word mean.

I think today I counted 6 science questions in the entire show.
