What is a GCSE grade X and how do you get one? All I know is it does not appear on the final certificate.

X is given to GCSE candidates who failed to sit more than 50% of their exams for that subject, to A-level candidates who do not complete all the modules required for a subject, but subsequently attempt to cash in their modules, and for any other unspecified reason when the decision has been taken not to issue a grade.

So, for the WJEC Welsh Second Language GCSE where 60% of the qualification is exams, the rest being coursework, if a person does not turn up for those exams I am assuming she will get an X.

I know this seems stupid, but i have a good friend in Wales who lives very close to the border and she does not want to do the welsh exam (which they are forced to do because so she can focus her revision time in getting better grades in all her other subjects. The school refuses to withdraw her from the exam. So she is planning to 'bunk' the welsh exam and if she gets an X it will be great as it wont be on her certificate whereas if she does get a grade then that wont look good on her certificate. (the final drafts of most of her coursework has been handed in and she has scored highly, nearly full marks, the idea came to her after she handed the top quality coursework).
