    Hi,

Listen I need some info on the indicators of human development , I know some like the HDI , HPI , life expectancy.

But I'm wondering if such things as crude birth and death rate , maternal mortality rate , age and sex specific death rate etc... are used to measure development.Cause I'm preparing an oral which must last 10 minutes on defining and measuring development.

    Thanks

Yeah, all of those things can be used as indicators of development.

What we learnt was that each of those listed can be used as development indicators seperately, but that isn't neccesarily representative. For example, Life expectancy in Egypt is similar to that of an MEDC, and yet Egypt is an LEDC.

Other you could use apart from the composite indexes could be doctoratient ratio, or perhaps adult literacy rate. Infant Motrality rate is often quite good...

Life expectancy at birth, HIV/AIDS - adult prevalence rate/deaths, Unemployment rate...

    The list goes on...

Remember that all indicators have their uses and limitations, and single indicators do not show development patterns. However, the more you combine indicators, the more you lose insight into specific aspects of development!

If you wanted to be really clever you could make up your own indicator, factoring lots of other smaller ones like infant mortality, eg assume development is 20% contributed by education, 20% by healthcare 20% by economic activity... etc... then education is defined by literacy, years of compulsary education etc etc... and turn it into one big formula (a bit like the HDI) and watch the marks come rolling in

I like the HDI and the Demographic Transition Model, while perhaps not a measure of development per se, is worth thinking about.
