Who did you send the appeal letter to? I sent one also to the Barclays Manchester address but not heard anything after a 10 days or so. Do they phone you or send a letter?
Why not apply to Co-op anyway as i have done while waiting for Barclays as applying to Co-op now should'nt hurt your Barclays application as Barclays should have done all the credit checks they need to do IMO.
Co-op said to me last week it will take around 3 weeks to process your application but if you ring them after maybe a week from them receiving your forms (they send you a text when they receive it) they may tell you if you passed the credit check.
Hi there, I'm just off the phone with Barclays (having applied for a PCDL) and I got told that my application had been 'provisionally accepted'. Can anyone here tell me, does that mean I've got the loan assuming my learning provider sign off, or is there some other criteria that still needs to be completed.

Thanks in advance.

You need to call them, most likely you wont hear from them, maybe not even when it will be finally rejected. Thats how they operate, i guess. I sent my appeal to Manchester too and been calling them every 3 days. If i hadnt done so, i doubt they would inform me in time...maybe they would but not in time so that i can deal with everything.

I was thinking the same, why not to send my Co- op application, because its already done and in the envelope sitting on my desk. But, honestly, i am a bit scared that it might somehow impact all the process, not sure its likely but what if they can find that out; that the Barclays application isnt closed yet. If i knew they cant find that out i would have sent it already. I will be waiting till this wednesday and then im going to send to Co - op, regardless what Barcalys says, because then by the time Co - op will start to look at that I should receive the final decision from Barclays.

I rang them and said they received my letter & it will take another 7-10 days as from yesterday to give me a decision.
Co-op text me yesterday saying they did'nt have my confirmation letter from the uni which they must have lost and when i asked they said it will take 3-5 days to reach a decision once they get everything so hoping that's right as the course starts in 3 weeks time.

I'm just worried that the reason why i got rejected by Barclays will happen the same for the Co-op as my credit file has'nt updated yet:frown:

It could be that Co - opwill be concerned of the same thing. But here in the forum have been a few members saying that Co - op accepted after Brclays rejected. There is always a little hope and there is nothing else to be done anyways. You have to try and apply.
In my case its a bit different, my credit score is good and Barclays just didnt like that i have written "unpaid cheque " on my statement, which was unpaid to me, not that i have not paid to someone and they asked a proof for that, which i and the manager of my branch supported. And when i will apply for Co - op in case Brclays still wont be stisfied, which is possible, they wont see this statement because its April's statement.
Does anybody know much about the AHRC's open competition?

I'm thinking about applying to some unis that aren't funded by the AHRC for a PhD and am unsure how it works. Do I send my application directly to the AHRC or is this done by the uni? Has anyone actually been successful in it?

It's done by you and the university who then submit to the AHRC I believe.

The figures suck for what's available studentship wise (think History only has 9 spots or something) and if you read the blurb, it's still aimed at those universities that received AHRC funding under the old system but wasn't enough to secure BGP funding.

Think someone in this thread though was awarded an open comp studentship, might be worth back-reading through it

Woaaaah....I've just been told I've got the funding!! I can't quite believe it. I applied for the open competition and I didn't even get a first so I'd presumed I wouldn't get it.

I know this is a bit late and apologise, what subject did you get funding in?

How did you find the process?

People, I really need an advice. I am holding an offer to study Msc programme at one of the best universities in UK this year, however I am only able to cover my tuition fees. Does anyone know about any loan possibilities in this situation ? Banks in my home country (I am EU student btw) do not provide any loans for students going abroad.
I dont think so. All loans here in the UK requires at least 3 years of residence in the UK prior you apply. Unfortunately, your only chance is to look harder in your home country.

Apply for a million different scholarships, and get a part-time job. Maybe you can teach your mother tongue or something.

Hi all, I'm looking into a research masters in cancer studies, has anyone doing a similar or biology-related course had any luck with funding? I feel like I've searched everywhere and not come up with anything better (that I am eligible for) than a bank loan. Did anyone manage to get funding anywhere else?
All this talk about science and research cuts has me rather worried about funding for next year.

Well, I didn't get open competition AHRC funding, which was depressing (but hardly unexpected - that open competition is horrendous). Going to start full-time (living on a combination of the goodwill of my partner and savings - thank God I worked for ten years!) and see how it goes. Will have to go part-time at some point though. I still don't regret applying to the university with the research group that has the supervisors whose specialist interests match mine, rather than to places where I could have applied for university funding. But ask me again in a year and I'll probably have changed my mind on that one... :s-smilie:

Is a PhD directly necessary to your career progression? Or is it only out of interest? If it is the latter, it probably is not the wisest idea to put all that money into it unless you know you will get a job after. Bearing in mind university departments tend to hire post-docs who received funding for their PhDs. Unless of course you have years of direct experience that supports the PhD which will help you get a university job.

:frown:. Does your Department have any small scholarships? It's not unusual that people that had zero funding their first year go on to get partial-funding in later years through scholarships, research assistantships or teaching assistantships. It's not as much money as a full-blown AHRC, but it might be enough to keep you off of the part-time option.
The open competition is akin to finding water in a drought - you might be lucky but don't get your hopes up. Apply to charities/trusts (there are some that take applications while you're studying on the PhD) and take out a CDL for the second and third year. You could always try the open competition again for the second year onwards?

I've just started an MA course, and managed to secure funding despite there not being any AHRC studentships for my subject at my university. The School of Humanities had an MA studentship opportunity, equivalent in value to the AHRC Research Preparation Masters Scheme, which I managed to get. So as an encouragement to those applying next year - it's still possible to find funding!

More the former than the latter, I think! But thanks
