I have that exam on those texts tomorrow! I've only just started my revision but these are the tings I'll be looking at. They might be quite useful so I'll post them here:

    Areas of Comparison:
    - the dark heroine (Eustacia/Catherine)
    - the outsider (Venn/Lockwood)
    - symbolic landscape
    - sense of place
    - human relationships (esp love)
    - control of society/society's rules&restrictions and the novelists' attitudes to them
    - man v society and man v nature- frailty of humanity
    - nature v nurture and education
    - superstition, the supernatural, faith and religion
    - passing of time and history
    - women, attitudes to women, feminist readings

    Areas of contrast
    - style, voice, tone (Hardy's pessimism, Bronte's romanticism)
    - narrative techniques (Hardy's dual vision, Bronte's narrators)
    - function and handling of characters (eg function of Thomasin and Isabella, Wildeve and Edgar)

    Good luck everyone!
