The diagram shows (attachd) a uniform rod AB of mass M and length 2a with the end B in contact with a rough vertical wall.The rod is held in equilbrium by a light inextensible string of length a with one end attached to the mid point G of the rod and the other end attached to a point C of the wall vertically above B.The string and the rod each make an acute angle @ with the horizontal.
a)Show that µ the coefficient of friction between the wall and the rod satisfies the relation µ more than or equal to tan @.
When a force of magnitude ½Mg acts at A,in the direction from A to C the system remains in equilibrium.
b)Find in terms of M,g and @,expressions for the horizontal and vertical components of the force acting on the rod at B.
c)Given that µ =0.75,deduce that tan @ less than or equal to ½
