Omg i know too many people applying for this :frown:
Loads for medicine and the sciences, some for law, economics and politics.
:O Really? There's never more than one or two applicants to Cambridge from my school!

I wonder how exactly they pick people...
My dad went to university but my mum didn't.
My teacher asked whether I got EMA as well, so does that factor in do you reckon? (I don't get it, btw) :s-smilie:
^ I'm in almost the exact same position my mum went to a university and my dad didn't, and I don't qualify for the EMA, so I hope that doesn't factor. What percentage of applications are successful, do you know/think?

well they choose about 250 students, and last year about 1,600 people applied (source: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/news/dp/2009121502) and since this year they "had a record number of applications" im guessing around 15% of applicants are successful.

I reckon its more about the grades rather then social class etc.
Courses such as Medicine are probably the most subscribed so more competition there.
15%?! I though it would be more than that...

I found some stats a bit ago from....urrrr. Crap. My memory has eloped it appears :\ 2008 maybe. Or 2007. Or...It's not important, really, is it? :P
ANYWAY, I think I worked it out that about a quarter of the applicants got a place :/ I think there were 1000 applied and about 250ish got places....
not looking good ;D
Well, good luck to all of you!

It really depends, you never know...
Oxford are doing a similar thing but during july..check out their website, i think the application for that open in march, however their application is LONG, you even have to write up a mini personal statement.
Well, my grades don't look very good on the surface - 8As - but it's because here you can only do 8 subjects, and there's no such thing as A* :nah:

There was nowhere on the form to say if it was a different examination system, so I just put it in brackets at the bottom XD
Reply 71
oh which examination system did you do then?
Scottish Intermediate 2s
Reply 73
Well then your grades are prefect, you have every chance of getting in...GOOD LUCK!!

My teacher told us that to stand a chance you have to have grades above your year group average; outperform your peergroup. For example, the average person in my year at GCSE got 2.6 A*s, so to outperform your peergroup you'd have to have 3 or, preferably, more A*s, if you see what I mean :]
How Cambridge would know that however is beyond me...
Wait, they can't know that! Can they??

Okay, now I need to somehow discover the average performance of my years group...

It's probably bullcrap to be fair :P She had to go away to find out so goodness knows whether it's freely available info or not :s-smilie:
Ah, this information is impossible to find!

I don't stand a chance if it's on grades :p: I got 3A*s, 3As and 2Bs, but it was the best in my year (of 30 people...).

But then neither of my parents went to universty and I get EMA, so maybe that might make up the comparative crappness off my grades :o:
^ What cha applying for?
