Disadvantages of York Uni?

Hi,

I have applied to York, and they have confirmed my application. I am hoping to get their standard offer for mathematics of ABB and i am predicted A*AA.

I am applying to Oxford, Bath, Bristol and Exeter too.

However, according to the Good University guide and other sources, It is about 11th in the country, with bristol being 10th and Exeter 9th.

But in terms of actual reputation Bristol is ahead, then York, then Exeter, would you agree with that?

In terms of reputation where would you actually rate York, is it nearer to Bristol or Exeter?

Also is there anyone from West Midlands (or anywhere really) who found adapting to York, easy/difficult?

cheers

The disadvantage of york is that its not really walkable from the city centres. everything is expensive. even on student nights it's not cheap. the city is small and the clubs are ****. It's a tiny boring city full or tourists with no primark and it's just genernally a great big pile of poo =)

They're all very good universities, and you'll enjoy yourself and get a very well respected degree whichever you go to. At that level, the differences don't really matter in terms of reputation.

This is from somewhere who lives between Hull and york. and prefers to eat in hull, go to un in Hull, shop in hull, go out in hull etc etc etc

York is generally a pretty **** place tbf
Disagree with TheGoose, although the town is a bus/taxi journey away it's just as easy to walk it or cycle in during the day. And yeah it's expensive, generally speaking, but there are plenty of student nights out where drinks are literally dirt cheap. I know there's a 90s night with 90p drinks, and a night where drinks are 75p, and Nags Head does Triples for Singles every week night... Tbh there are bargains and deals EVERYWHERE, especially on the student nights out - and there's a few discount cards you can get as well. The clubs aren't fantastic by the normal night life standard (coming from Nottingham myself...) but I have had brilliant nights out here; it's more about the people you go out with. In my opinion anyways . And pre-lash always helps! :p: I would say that York is more of a pub/bar place, it's literally crawling with bars. Yates and Vodka Revs are good, and if you're into cheese and general cheap (but excellent!) rubbishness I'd advise Flares and Reflex. I'd think there is actually something for most people - if you're into heavier music rather than the normal chart/club stuff there's Fibbers and the Duchess that do loads of indie etc. nights.

As for the uni itself, no complaints here really. I would probably rate it similarly to you, Bristol, then York, then Exeter. But as beatleboar said I think it really does depend on your course.

I've graduated from York and was a great experience, plus the lecturers were great. It is a quiet town but you can still find a lot of places to go out at night. Some students were visiting Leeds for the nightlife since it is really close to York. One good thing about York is that they have a lot of accommodation. Most students stayed in the halls of residence throughout their whole course. About the reputation,we always had visits from big companies such as IBM, Deloitte,BAE etc, so I think that they are aware of York's academic reputation.

75p drinks? where? I know about nags head but lets face it - it's a dive. revs is alright but there's practically nothing else. unless you do a mickelgate run and even so it's not fab.

best place is monty's on a tuesday really.
It's quite boring.

It's at Salvation on a Wednesday as they're trying to compete with Ziggys for the sport social night. They're failing, miserably.

Depends what you're looking for in a night out really, I guess.

Thank you for all the excellent replies.

?!?!? I'm at Uni in Sheffield, and York University is the same distance from the city walls, as Sheffield's campus is from their main halls of residence.

I loved York, I would go back there in a heartbeat to leave Sheffield - it's small but I still enjoyed nights out even at the end of my 4 year long undergraduate degree.

It's at least as cheap as Sheffield (And cheaper for accommodation!) and as long as you like bars and pubs then you'll be happy.

But that's me. The downside for some people is that it's not huge. For me, that was a huge upside.

Really, the only way to know is to come and see it for yourself.

York isn't the best for going but if you really want a good night, nip on a train to leeds and go have fun :]
York is not a place for superclubs. If you don't use your discretion it can be expensive (like anywhere else). Some people don't like the architecture on campus.

I, on the other hand, love the fact it's got so many bars. The city itself is beautiful. The people, in the city and on campus, are very friendly. The uni is relatively small, which gives it a proper feeling of community - one that I certainly didn't feel when I was at Cardiff Uni. Bring a bike and everything you could want to get to is acessible in no time. There are loads of cycle lanes and the cars are very used to bikes being around a lot of the time. I think the campus is lovely. It's got a parkland kind of feel to it, what with all the birds, the lake and the trees, which is very relaxing.

I imagine York isn't for everyone - but I think the negativity with which some people view it is unwarranted.

This, I can answer!
I'm from Warwickshire, and I'm loving it up here. The distance into town isn't so bad, it's easy to get to the train station and there are good rails links to the West Midlands, especially Birmingham. There's a couple of trains a day that go direct to my town - I love not having to change - so that's convenient. The distance home might be more than you might be comfortable with - it's 3/4 hours in the car for me - but if you don't mind being further away, it's fine.
Whereabouts in the West Midlands do you hail from?

Well I am someone who lives between Hull and York all my life and I can tell you Hull is a bag of **** compared to York.
York is the most hygienic city in Britain, which is a plus.
