    Well was he?
No, he was the leader of a country. Is Tony Blair classed as a celebrity, or John Major. No

If the definition of a celebrity is 'someone who is famous', then yes, he is.

Ian Huntley is becoming famous. Everyone in Britain knows his name, but he is far from a celebrity

Like I said, it depends upon the specific definition. If being a celebrity requires popularity, then neither Hitler or Ian Huntley qualify. If, however, the sole requisite is to be 'well-known', then they are both celebrities under this context.

    Celebrity - Celebrated.
If a person is celebrated, then they are a celebrity.

Some people liked Stalin. Some people like Osama Bin Laden - they think he's a good bloke even if the west thinks he's a crack pot.

You have to compare the status. Hitler was well known everywhere, Stalin was not as well known. But you can call him a celebrity if you want. Depends on the person and how well known they are.

No. Jack the Ripper wasn't a celebrity. Many at the time had heard of the killer, that didn't make him a local celebrity.

Celebrities aren't just celebrities if they're well-know, they have to be admired. Most people didn't admire Hitler, apart from the Nazis. I would hardly call him a celebrity. He's just infamous.

hmm oh well, i dont think a person has to be admired to be called a celebrity. A celebrity is someone of distinction. Hitler is famous to me..

Fame is not equivalent to celebrity...

You are famous if many people know who you are
I would argue that celebrity is fame in the arena of showbusiness

Therefore, Hitler was famous but not a celebrity
