could someone please explain the priciple of red shift?,

i know that it is something to do with light going to the red side of the spectrum as a star moves further away from us? but i don't understand why and why that is so important???

thanx

you can calculate how far away the object is moving away relative to a source.

by the way, wrong forum.

basically, the frequency of the waves shift towards the lower end of the spectrum if they are further away, I don't think you need to know why they do that, they just do! (anyways we didn't last year!)

The more distant galaxies have greater red shifts than the nearer ones so must be moving faster. This suggests that the universe is expanding which supports the big bang theory.
