My friend had her nose pierced by a colleague the other day and explained to me how she had it done with a gun Had another piercing (top of ear) at the same time as the other stud in the packet would have gone to waste and how the 'back' on the nose stud is annoying...

I expressed my concern over the fact that it was done with a gun but she just shrugged and looked clueless. Is there anything to be concerned about? I would like to tell her if there is but don't want to misinform her, I'm not very clued up about piercings.

i had my nose pierced by a needle, so i always thought this was the way to do it, however i went with my friend to get hers done, and we were very shocked when the woman pulled out a gun to pierce it.
however she is a very well known and repected piercer, so she wouldn't use a gun if it wasn't safe.
to be honest there should be nothing wrong with your friends piercing as long as it is cleaned well and protected

It really isn't good to get your nose pierced with a gun however I did and it didn't get infected or anything :dunno:

Hmm, I was almost certain that needles were supposed to be used for nose piercings...

What about the fact that it has a back? I don't have my nose pierced but I though nose studs were hooked or something?

Thanks for the reply

it is a bit strange that is has a back, the fact that she got her ear pierced at the same time and you said she used the same packet to do both piercings, suggests to me that she might have had it done with an earring?
but i dont know why she would.
it's a bit weird ot have a back to them, i've never heard of that, if its an earring it'll mean she'll have a bigger piercing hole.

It shouldnt have been done with a gun and it shouldnt have a back. I have my nose pierced (done with a needle) and the stud has been hooked to keep it in.

She may be well-known and respected but that doesn't mean she's actually good =/ I wouldn't respect any piercer using a gun - even for lobes.

Guns cause more trauma than a needle, can't be properly sterilised, often result in bad placement, the jewellery is usually quite low quality and the butterfly backed design is just crap. I'd advise her to get the jewellery changed by a professional piercer at least - to a nostril screw or labret stud made of implant grade titanium. Much more suitable. If the placement is crap though, as it tends to be with gunned nostrils, she may well save time just taking it out and getting it redone properly, as gunned piercings will often take longer to heal and have more problems along the way.

Also, piercers using guns tend to give out solutions like the ones at Claire's which aren't actually any good - tell her that sea salt soaks are better for aftercare. 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a mug of hot water, soak piercing in that for 5-10 minutes once or twice a day.

It's really not a good idea - guns aren't designed for fibrous tissue like noses and the damage they can do is considerable due to the blunt trauma studs inflict. I wouldn't like a butterfly back in my nose either, given that the damp conditions are bacteria heaven (which get trapped in butterflies much more easily than CBRs) and the risk of it getting dislodged, inhaled and stuck.

I'm absolutely not having a go at you (especially since you had yours done properly!), but getting it done with a gun is really not a good idea. If I were the OP's friend I'd be going to a qualified piercer to see what they recommend and whether they can change the jewellery to something safer at this stage. Then again, if I were them, I'd have run a mile at the first sight of a gun and wouldn't have had it done...

I had mine done with a gun, and i never got an infection or anything, and the back of my nose stud is this curly thing.. no screw stud hasnt gone in yet ( its not actually a end that looks like a screw, more like the thing that holds the nose stud in, is screwed into the tube part not my nose) <--did that even make sense O.o , but im planning on to do so soon. The curly one, was strange at 1st, but im used to it now, and is normal.. atleast i think so.

I dont get the gun thing.. that has a needle on it, so whats the problem? Doesnt that make needles the same as a gun which has a needle in it? I had mine done at a proffesionals.

Thanks everyone.

I thought my concerns were valid. I'll give her a polite text to see how things are going and if she has any worries I'll refer her to a specialist. Hopefully she'll listen! Bloody rogue piercers :grumble:

A gun just forces the actual stud through the ear, there's no needle involved. The sharp end of a butterfly-backed stud is it - and it's practically blunt compared to a needle.

Good video to show the differences.

How did she actually manage to get that gun in her nose?! If she's using the one I'm thinking of, then they're enormous, and unless she's a hippo...

I got mine pierced with a gun, and it's been absolutely fine. I also got all of my lobe piercings - 6 of them - with a gun, and they're fine too.

I have no idea not sure what gun it was. She's not a hippo though :p:

I know gun piercings can be fine, but after everything else she said I was a bit worried.

I'd be more worried about the top of her ear, tbh - a gun being used there can make the cartilage collapse, and they're a bugger to heal as it is!

As long as she looks after them properly, she shouldn't have any real problems though. I recommend sea salt soaks - as someone else has already recommended - and then tea tree oil. I've used those on each of my piercings - aside from my nape, cos it's a bugger to get to - and they've all healed beautifully

You had an earring through your nose? Erm, doesn't the pointy bit stab you? That sounds like a really bad idea to me, why didn't you get it done with a proper nose stud, may I ask?

Turning the jewellery actually isn't a good idea. It's pretty outdated advice that not-very-good piercers and people who work at Claire's and other equally crap places still tell people to follow. Totally unnecessary and irritates the piercing more than doing any good - you wouldn't rub something up and down a cut or any other wound! Your skin isn't going to 'heal to the jewellery' - any material that your skin could grow into shouldn't be anywhere near a healing piercing!
