Heh good point. But they've always blagged on about auxins, gibberellins etc and call them 'plant growth substances'. If I knew they were proteins (or something else) I could include that in an essay possibly.

ellie, you should know... after all you are a plant after all (we found out your secret!)

... if it's not obvious enough i hate plant growth hormones because it was a completely pointless topic of pure memorising!!! the only good thing was i knew the ethene bit from food science (another of my favourites! )

    I know i know!!!

    a) plant growth substances ARE NOT HORMONES
A hormone by definition must be in the blood

    b) hormones CAN be steroids, catecholamines OR protein

    c) No. We looked it up for a protein essay - plant growth substances ARE NOT PROTEIN

I have a really bad habit of calling them plant hormones. But then, you can use them in an essay on hormones right?

hey dont know if this issue has been resolved but iv got an essay mark scheme for "chemical coordination in animals and plants" i.e hormones and plant growth substances are on the mark scheme! much to my dismay!! they suck iv only learnt really basic stuff on them, nothing like "commerical applications". If they come up in detail im doomed. but i think im pretty much doomed already! gd luck every1!!

Okay let's forget the internet for just a minute, as if you've ever taken a computing subject you will have had it hammered into you that you should never trust anything you read - as you don't know if the person who wrote it was a specialist or not
What's this? Oh lookie it's my copy of the "AS / A-level Biology Essential Word Dictionary". And what does it say under hormone?

HORMONE: A chemical messenger that is transported in the blood
    - Hormones are secreted into the blood by endocrine glands. They are transported to target cells, where they bind to specific receptors on the cell surface membrane. The hormone then influences the physiology of the cell this way, by changing membrane permeability, altering the activitiy of the enzymes, or activiating or inhibiting genes
e.g. Insulin is a homrone secreted by the pancreas in response to increased blood glucose level. It stimulates liver and muscle cells to take up glucose from the blood and convert it into glycogen, thus lowering the blood glucose level
