Drink is fun! UK has the biggest population of binge drinkers in the worlds, thoughts like that could ruin it for us!

Sure, no one needs alcohol to have fun (unless they've tipped the balance and are now an alcoholic, in which case they do and should get help). Nor does anyone need a cigarette to relax (see above for addicts). Drugs, ditto. If you want to be teetotal, good for you, it's healthier (although some red wine each day is good for heart disease) than the alternative.

HOWEVER - and capitals are required as it's a big one! - you're cutting yourself off from things too. There are certain experiences, positive and negative, that you're not going to have because you'll be too sober and sensible to take the risk or to embarrass yourself. Although not often pretty, getting hammered every so often is cathartic and is good for releasing tension.
Furthermore, even moderate amounts of alchohol can be lovely. A single glass of wine over dinner with good company can be fantastic, a cool beer on a warm day relaxing. The reduction of inhibitions as you get slowly drunk with a potential girlfriend is a great experience.

That isn't to say that you won't enjoy yourself if you don't drink, or that you'll never have great dinner conversations, relaxed afternoons or, indeed, uninhibited sex. But alcohol has been around for centuries, and is still around, for a reason. It can enhance a positive experience, provide fun you didn't know you could have and make relationships easier.

Remember, you don't have to drink to excess, you could just drink moderately without too many health risks and get the best of both worlds. I wouldn't choose to be teetotal, unless it was necessary for some reason.

It's kinda like saying you are never going to eat doughnuts because they're unhealthy. You don't need doughnuts to enjoy your cup of coffee, but every now and again it's nice to have one. It's a treat. Sharing a doughnut with a friend is an enjoyable experience, and it would be a shame to just write it off completely. Your health will not suffer from having the odd doughnut, it's only when you have too many that you get fat.

You have no idea how much I want a jam-filled doughnut right now.

My point: if you feel that being teetotal is the right decision for you, then try it. There's no problem with trying it, and then deciding it isn't. Once you decide, its not final.

Alcohol can be fun in moderation  I like to drink till I get a little merry and then I stop and that makes for a lot of fun. Being tee-total when your in a group of friends can be a bit dull (I'm often the "designated driver" mainly because I'm the only one that can drive in my social circle  ) you do feel a bit left out. But I can do without if I'm with friends

Thinking of Tee-total... I wonder if our wonderful friend Need_Money is still Tee-Total...

i can't bring myself to drink alcohol. i don't know why. i wish i was not teetotal, but i can't seem to get over the fear of drinking.

i'm not even sure what i'm afraid of. it must be partly that i'm an extremely reserved person and don't like the idea of losing my inhibitions, but it's not just that.... because i can't even make myself drink a single glass of champagne at new year.

it's really annoying.

err... any advice?

Have a friend spike your J20 with a Vodka shot
Seriously though, if you're with responsible friends and you limit yourself as soon as you feel a little tipsy, theres nothing to worry about

Try starting off with something like a Smirnoff Ice maybe or another Vodka mix  They're low content (Smirnoff Ice is 5% i think) so 1 bottle won't be enough to cause you to keel over and they're LITERALLY just like lemonade.

what, really? i would have thought the vodka based drinks were quite potent?

i am seriously going to make myself get over this this summer.

i hope i don't turn out to have a predisposition towards alcoholism. boy will i ever regret being so determined if i do.

No they aren't. The only Vodka based drink I can think of thats quite potent is Vodka - neat. Thats between 35% and 65% depending on your personal preference and of course the size of you wallet.
Vodka based alcopops like Smirnoff Ice, VK Ice, WKD etc are all between 3.5% and 5.5% and they don't have a specific taste like straight Vodka or beer. Like their name suggests, they are like a bottle of pop but with a shot of vodka in.

I haven't drunk in over a year, and I still do the same thing, see the same people and have the same amount of fun. Don't let anyone tell you you can't.
A common concept among the many drinkers; Doublethink - the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them. i.e Drink is good, ciggerettes/cannabis are bad.
Reply 19
Not true - drinking in moderation does no harm and can actually be good for you. Smoking is always bad for you, and cannabis is illegal.

So there's a bit of a difference...
