that was from the board mock, n heres the mark scheme

    a) Let X be the number of vases with defects, then X ~ B(20, 0.15)
    From tables, P(X≤0)= 0.0388 and P(X≥7)= 0.0219
These are the values closest to 2.5% at each tail. Hence critical region given by X≤0 and X≥7
    b) The actual significance level is 3.88 + 2.19 = 6.07%

i get the x»7 bit, but how is x«0 at the other end. Should it not just be x<0 because 0.0388>0.025.

yeah i can see ur thinkin behind that, but theres no hard n fast rule that it has to b less than 2.5%
if it said in the question less than 2.5% u'd say X<0
but since it just says closest to..
    it can still b X«0

Is it not using the value below 0.025 and above 0.975?

i see ,so depends on the specific question...

How the hell is X supposed to be less than nothing? o____0

IF the question asks for the significance level, it will be a two tailed test, and both tails need to be as close to 2.5% (or otherwise stated) as possible...

<== the only year 12 in my school still officially on study leave, as it is policy one can have the day before an exam, and the day of the exam, off.
