How good is Surrey Univerisity?

Scroll to see replies

Surrey, middle of the road University, nothing Brilliant apart from it's career propsects and starting salaries, one of the highest in the country, in fact for Economics it was £26K!

Do well there and at least you know you've got a job, a very good well paid one at that. The League tables are about right, top 25/30. I also went to the open day and the people there said a guy from Economics got into Cambridge for his Mphil!
I chose Surrey over Warwick :teehee:
The scholarship scheme was too enticing.
Top in the country for Graduate prospects and just a really nice campus, although there is alot of stairs and hills to walk. There is plenty of different ethnic groups around. Most notably alot of Greeks and Cypriots.

Guildford itself is very expensive though :frown:

Surrey Univerisity...Not Posh ???
loool

Maybe some of the people in Surrey but not the university itself really. I suppose I could have a bit of a jaded view because I've lived here for 18 years.

Well I have lived in Epsom for 16 years, not too posh there to be honest, but better than most places  lool
Delight :)

Wow, and you picked that over Warwick?

I'm in the same dilemna that you may have faced, I can realistically get into some top 12-15 Unis such as Loughborough, Birmingham, York but instead like Royal Holloway, City and Surrey due to their location, allows me to live out year 1 whilst commuting years 2 and 3.

What do you think I should do

It's not all about league tables
The location was a huge factor for me. The fact i'm far enough from home not to just pop home when i want, but i can go home every other weekend. As i am now

Don't get me wrong i was very impressed with Warwick, but I don't come from a hugely priviliged background and so when Surrey was offering me about £3,000 more money in scholarships and bursaries, I couldn't resist.
I decided not to commit to any Mmath program with Surrey as I wanted to keep that option open as I'd still like to get a masters at Warwick.
I'm at Surrey, it's a really nice place and the tutors are very organised (for my course anyway). The campus is quite nice, and there are loads of cafes and restaurants dotted about for breaks in between lectures. I've heard good things about the placement year that's offered for a lot of courses too. Walking distance to the town centre and station which is handy too. I don't know what it's like living on campus though as I commute in, I imagine it's pretty nice though.

Oh ok (:
What course you take?
And what is the atmosphere and ethinic group like?
Thanks
I do Operating Department Practice. I think the atmosphere is pretty good. We have a pretty good rapport with our tutors too. And it does seem pretty ethnically diverse from what I've seen, for example in my class there are people from Africa, India, Philippines, Holland, China...

Ive applied for surrey university to do law. They are asking for ABB (320 points). But they also said, they will consider applications whos courses are academic i.e english, history, science, maths etc.... where they will accpet BBB 300 points.

Im in A2 studying English lang, Media and ICT. Im applying to do international law at surrey but don't think im going to get ABB. therefore im aiming for BBB, but even though my subjects arn't exactly academic apart from english lang, they might consider it from my personal statement expierence etc...

Btw also applied to kingston, nottingham trent and portsmouth.

I'm going to Surrey next year. The campus is small which is what i like about it because everyone is on the same campus. Your a short walk into town, a short train ride from London. It's prefect to me

I've been a student at Surrey for almost two months now (posting from Twyford Court!), and I can say from experience that a few bits of information I was told by the internet aren't true now that I'm here. Firstly, Surrey University isn't posh, and I haven't got that impression from the town centre either (apart from the high prices).

The atmosphere is great as it's a small green campus that has a nice cathedral overlooking it, and I think it's one of those universities that can almost instantly feel welcoming and homely. Plus, if you do somehow get bored of Guildford, London isn't far away at all.

Obviously the league table positions vary on subject, but in almost every case Surrey University is a good ranking university and one that you can put on your CV with at least a little pride (perhaps not as much so as more prestigious universities, but it's still regarded as a good university as it places emphasis on practical industry experience which I have found is almost pivotal in competition for jobs).

Thinking about it, after you leave Surrey University you'll have a well regarded degree, a good job and relevant work experience. I would recommend this university.

That was a helpful post, thanks.

How do you find the nightlife?
Ive just withdrawn from Birmingham and obviously the nightlife was really good- so many people say its rubbish/really quiet at Surrey. But i liked it both times ive looked and i am applying again this year.

Thanks

Hey,
Question speaks for itself really, was just wandering I am in year 12 and just thinking of Univeristies to choose.. but was wandering how good or bad it is? what are the majority of people (ethinic wise) and what is the atmosphere like?
Also what grades I need if I was to take Law or Economics
Business Studies, Economics, Government and Politics and History are the AS Levels I take
Thank you

The University itself would be hard to bad mouth. Lovely campus, plenty of facilities, most your needs catered for, excellent accommodation, and a lively and active union.

The majority is as you would expect, British. However the ethnic contingent is significantly larger than Northern and Midlands based Universities. It is, more in line with London. As previously said, this is primarily Greeks and Cypriots.

Unfortunately they have a tendency to group up and segregate themselves, which can be an issue. In computer science for example, all the Greeks sit on one side of the lecture theater, and everyone else on the other. They are however, tremendously lovely people, if you manage to pry one off their grouping . Although I am not sure on the numbers doing Law or Econ (I'd have assumed it was low).

The entry requirements for both Law and Economics are on the site, and I don't think there is going to be a huge revision anytime soon.

Guildford station is just around the corner, and can link you quite quickly to almost all national rail stations. And if not, then via Reading, London, or Woking.
