yeahhh im glad i had the interview too, something i wont forget for sure. ermm well ive applied to do mechanical engineering at bristol bath cardiff and swansea. what engineering are you looking to do? or was it just general?
I wanted to know if there is a reading list sent out in August or anything else that could be of use to those of us currently on a gap year who need to keep our maths up, any suggested reading. Personally I won't be back in the country until a couple of weeks before term starts so will really need to sort stuff out before I go, but that is very soon, so any suggested stuff would be good especially if it is available in an ebook format.

Shortly after getting my grades and confirmation of my place last year (2010) I got a pack in the post with some suggest textbooks and a reasonably large amount of work that I had to do in preparation: "Mathematics", "Electricity" and "Statics and Dynamics". We had to complete them before coming up and then our first tutorials were on them.

I ended up having to teach myself complex algebra before coming up because I hadn't done Further Maths, which seems like a lot of work but pretty much prepared me for work at uni

The pack afaik suggested you started it in early September to complete it by term starting in early October. I hope this helps.

EDIT: I'm at Catz, I don't know if any of the other colleges had this work to do...

They suggest a few textbooks and send you holiday homework, as mentioned above. If you want to catch up with maths, I would recommend you get Advanced Engineering Mathematics by Stroud. It generally keeps things simple, and will cover the basics of all of the first year (and some A-level) maths that you need to know. I might have a PDF version of it somewhere and can send it to you if I get a hold of it.

As for physics, I think it would be better if you went over you A-level material rather than diving into new stuff. It's more important that you feel confident with the fundamental stuff you learned at school, and it'll also help you complete the holiday work.

Hey guys, I'm an anxious year 12 student as you can probably make out from the title.
I'm going to apply to Oxford in October this year, as well as 4 other unis, for General Engineering and electronic engineering.

I just wanted to ask if I have a good chance on getting into Oxford (I understand that a lot depends on the interview).
Anyway, here are some of the relevant details:

GCSE: 9A*s and an A in English Lang.
I've got an Arkwright Scholarship
Completed the Engineering Education Scheme
Done Work Experience with two engineering firms
working in the greenpower challenge where we build a car from scratch.

I wanted to apply for the Headstart Engineering courses but I only heard about them after the deadline :frown:

What do you think? What other extra-curricular engineering things could I do to improve my chances?

Thanks in advance

Do something a little bit different. It sounds stupid, but a lot of people applying for engineering will have loads of relevant experience. If you have relevant experience and a little bit of something else, to show you've got broad interests, it'll set you apart from everyone else who's got more or less the same thing

If you've got to ask whether or not you're capable than you're probably not. Unless you're trying to purposely show off.

be confident, i'm pretty sure you have a chance, just express your passion for the course well in your personal statement and stuff. and look around the course and maybe pick out one part of it that you find interesting and read about that, it'll help in your personal statement and in your interview.
The big question is, how good are you at maths?

I am doing other extra curricular stuff too, I just wanted to highlight the engineering stuff because I thought that's only what oxford will look at. (eg. GOLD DofE, i'm an NCO in the RAF section of the CCF, etc

The thing with confidence is that I am really confident at times, and think that I can put a good application to oxford... and then there are times like these where I feel the need to ask a forum.. :frown:

As for my maths ability, I'm doing maths for ib at HL. I've heard it gets tough.

Oxbridge usually like people to have a wide range of activities. I've not applied but I went on a summer school there last year and they basically told us how to get in
really? You created a new thread to really show off?

Not sure why I created it...

In my mild depression I wanted some sort of assurance from the interwebz about my future...

Of course you're going to get in with that list of qualifications longer than my arm, why even bother making the post?

Consider Cambridge/Imperial, they are probably just slightly better for engineering.

And is this mild depression because you got 1 A? OMG the end of the world is here!!!!!

Yes, your qualifications are fine, but that will only take you as far as the interview. Then it all comes down to how well you can perform under pressure in an interview.

Oxford is interested only in your capability and potential to do well on the course, which is largely maths and that is what the interview will be about.
