Hey guys, I'm an anxious year 12 student as you can probably make out from the title.
I'm going to apply to Oxford in October this year, as well as 4 other unis, for General Engineering and electronic engineering.

I just wanted to ask if I have a good chance on getting into Oxford (I understand that a lot depends on the interview).
Anyway, here are some of the relevant details:

GCSE: 9A*s and an A in English Lang.
I've got an Arkwright Scholarship
Completed the Engineering Education Scheme
Done Work Experience with two engineering firms
working in the greenpower challenge where we build a car from scratch.

I wanted to apply for the Headstart Engineering courses but I only heard about them after the deadline :frown:

What do you think? What other extra-curricular engineering things could I do to improve my chances?

Thanks in advance

hey man... can u tell me how to join greenpower and wat the procedure is.. will be really nice if u can help.. thanks man

Sure, for me it was through my school as we had enough people interested in participating in this challenge. We just asked out D&T teacher to supervise us and help us, so he applied for us. We will be making the car and we plan on entering the race in the summer of 2012.
However even if we don't get to the point of entering the race, it would be quite satisfactory to have built a car entirely from scratch.

For you, I would suggest that you find others your age to work with in a team, and then ask the support of your school or college. There'll be more details on the website greenpower.co.uk

ok, do the students have to be from my school or can i choose some friends from another school.. the other question is how much do i have to pay?

finally, you know for the EES, if i enter, what is the procedure like and how do i make a team..

thanks man... send me a mesage itll be easier.

I got similar GCSE's, hadn't done Arkwright or EES but i did do experience at 2 engineering firms, the Navy (focusing on engineering) and at GSK, and worked on building a Caterham 7 at school & I did a Headstart course so fairly similar to you.
I got an offer from Jesus.
It sounds like you're doing well so far but it also depends on your AS results (or IB predictions), the subjects you are taking etc. If you are doing maths higher you will do less mechanics than those taking futher maths so it might be worth trying to teach yourself M3 as this came up in both my interviews... for basically the whole interview.
It also depends what extra curricular stuff you do...

What do you think? What other extra-curricular engineering things could I do to improve my chances?

Thanks in advance

^Thanks a lot for the reassurance Lucy!

We do quite a lot of mechanics in our physics syllabus, but the head of maths is also going through M1 and M2 with us currently. Hopefully we'll do some M3 too
Hello,

Earlier this year I attended the oxford university open day, during which I met one of the tutors for engineering, among other things he told me to go and find 'A thick university textbook with plenty of examples which focuses on general engineering and its key principles' now I asked him if he would specify a book, but he would not, so I am asking any engineering students or tutors out here on the forum if you know of any books like this? I believe that having lots of examples is a priority.

Thanks in advance.
Hello,

I'm pretty much asking the same question as .Met - I'm a year 13 student at the moment and am deciding whether I should apply to Oxford or not to study Gen. Engineering (then hopefully Civil Engineering). As with .Met, I'm aware that a lot depends on the interview and PAT (I think :O)

Erm, my grades so far are:
6A* 3A 1B at GCSE
AABB at AS Level
Studying Maths, Physics and Economics at A2
Predicted - A*AA at A2
Arkwright Scholar
Work Experience at a major engineering firm
Went on a Headstart Course at Bristol

Any help would be much appreciated!

Do well on the PAT and you look like a good applicant
Which subjects were the As and Bs in at AS? And is the predicted A* in maths or physics?

What sort of help are you looking for?

Hey, .met. here... If it helps I got into Oxford for engineering
You have great extracurriculars, such as the Arkwright and your work exp. I think what you have to work on now is getting very good a level results and a decent PAT score.
Also as long as you have A*s in GCSE maths and physics, and are predicted an a* in a level maths, you would be a good candidate.

Apart from the PAT, what other entrance exam does an applicant to Mechanical Engineering need to sit?

Come on, you're applying for this course. You should know that an engineering science course is very different from a mechanical engineering course by now.

But to answer your question: what makes you think there is more than one aptitude test? They didn't even have the PAT until this year, i believe.

for some reason, part of my post was written in White so you didn't see.. Highlight the blank area under the link I posted and you will see:

I'm not sure why they dont have separate pages for each course like other unis though

It is because there is only 1 course: Engineering Science. The other aspects are options in your 3rd and 4th years, so i guess they feel multiple UCAS codes are appropriate.

To quote that website:
The first two years of Engineering Science are devoted to topics which we believe all Engineering undergraduates should study. In the third and fourth years there is scope for specialisation into one of six branches of engineering: Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Information and Mechanical.

Engineering type:Chemical Engineering

Name of College/Open Application: Kebel

Other universities applied to: IC UCL

A-levels(has achieved): A* A*A*A* for Math Physics Chemisty and Biology; A for fMath

Oxford has mentioned in the past that they prefer that you put H100 on your application as this shows you know Oxford offers 'Engineering Science' that starts as two years general engineering and a third year where you can choose a few specialised units, and a fourth year where you choose a few more.

All the other codes are so people will find Oxford in a more specific search
