Engineers logbook

Hi

Im in my first year of mechanical engineering at uni and Ive been told to do some research for a project, and note all the information gathered in a logbook.

This my be a stupid question but I just wanted to know weather you can copy this information "word for word" off the internet into the logbook? After asking my lecturer he stated that this is alright as long as you reference. I talked to previous student from this uni doing engineering and they say that you need to paraphrase or rewrite it, otherwise you will need to identify you are quoting. I need some help with this, so if there are any engineers out there, I could sure use some advice.

Thanks

You should always provide references, whether you have paraphrased or not. Just to be safe.

Does that mean I can copy word for word? If so will just providing references keep me safe?

it depends on whether your submitting this log book as your own or as your part of research

usually a log book is like a diary where you write down what you did every day for your project so in this case a think you can just copy and paste and note where you got it from just in case you need to use it agian for your own research

however if you are submitting as your own work you would need to quote it and then rephrase it in your in own words making sure you quote them other wise your lecturer can fail you for pledgerism

Using some else's words is plagiarism. Does not matter that you have properly referenced. You may use quotations but quotations should be properly identified by using italics, quotation marks eg and saying that you are quoting and from whom. You should of course reference. Quotations should only be used rarely and sparingly, though. They can be used when there is no other better way of saying something very specific and epic.
