The NAS textbook goes into a lot of detail on this stuff and its not even really clear from the spec what we need to / dont need to know. Can anybody outline the main ideas behind this commercial uses of organic compound rubbish!

uses of esters
· fibres (polyesters
Terylene (polyester) is made by condensation polymerisation
· made from benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid and ethane-1,2-diol (two monomers)
· reacts to form a ester linkage with the elimination of water
· forms a polyester
Use of arenes:
· explosives, pharmaceuticals and dyes from nitration of arenes
· polymers such as polystyrene from alkylation of arenes
Phenols used for antiseptics and disinfectants

But has anyone actually seen a question in a past paper on this topic apart from the polymers?

nope, cant say I have, all the more reason for it to come up as its in the specification.
also polyesters can be broken by hot alkali, thats why its a bit dodgy using it in the lab because labcoats are made form this I think.
