I was wondering what the Internet connection is like, in terms of speed?

I do a lot of uploading (online backups) so this is especially important to me.

The on campus wireless is fairly average.
The internet in the residences is pretty slow. Do you know where you'll be living?

I'm on campus, and in residences the page load speeds are fine, but downloads and streaming take ages. I think this may be a feature rather than a bug, the techies might have deliberately slowed everything to do with videos and streaming and torrents to lower the amount of bandwidth used.

Not to be too geeky about this but...

I thought they'd block the ports for torrenting on campuses?

If not then i'm happier.~I'd rather slow torrents than no torrents anyday...
Stupid all good tv shows being shown in America...

Torrenting is okay, its faster in the morning

Having played round with torrents at uni for about a term ive kinda figured the only way to torrent and not get throttled is to set your max connections to 25, any more and they will block you for about half a hour

asked the exact same question before i came here mate, a run down (from an east slopian point of view):

iplayer: average, most of the time runs fine, but occasionally just stops buffering.

4od: no chance, doesn't even attempt to work

itv player: bit crap, but occasionally works

youtube: hmmm...most of the time you'll have to leave the vid to load for a while before you play it

megavideo: average loading speeds (most of the time) but because you're on a shared network you could be cut off by their 72 minute limit at any time lol

torrents: i average between 30 and 200 kb/s depending on what time it is, not great, but do-able if you want something enough

rapidshare: mental, my flatmates has a premium account and downloads at an average speed of about 1 or 2 meg a second. ridiculous.

hope this helps
