I've finished this course (submitted my ECA a few weeks ago). It's actually really interesting and if you've studied a fair bit of Chemistry and Biology AS, you barely need to read the first few chapters. I hated AS Chemistry, but really enjoyed this so it is really good!
I'm doing Chemistry and Biology AS simultaneously. When I looked at the textbook the content looked quite scary, but I'm sure there'sno need to worry?

I'm doing it in May next year and submitting it by the end of July so it doesn't interfere with my exams. clever thinking, eh?

I am (but not YASS). Looking forward to it, despite not having done anything to do with chemistry since school...

I was quite excited when I got my materials yesterday, it was like Christmas had come early. How long have you spent so far playing with the molecule kit?? I think everyone in my family so far has had a play with it....

I love how the box says 'this is not a toy'. It looks like a toy to me. :p:

Edit: now I'm slighty peed off. My sister has come home over lunch and dismantled all my carefully made molecules. :p:

It looks like a toy to me too! I'm going to play with it eventually, but for now it's safely stored away. xD

What was your initial reaction to the textbook?

It's shorter than my last one!

It doesn't look too daunting, but maybe that's because I've just finished two other science short courses and have my science brain properly in gear now. And obviously, by the time you've covered the easy stuff, the harder stuff doesn't look so hard any more....I don't think you'd have much trouble if you're doing Chemistry AS.

They start you off very gently.

No, you'll learn most of the molecule etc and enzyme stuff in bio and chem AS - you'll be ahead of your class then! It's fairly easy to grasp, maybe have a look in your AS textbooks if you get stuck?

Also, the ECA wasn't too bad for me, although I had to do an extra 20 mins work when I realised that I hadn't read the question properly and you actually had to draw the molecules! Have fun!
Im stuck on Q1 c.
Can someone please explain???

What are the essential properties of a compound that might be a potential general anaesthetic for administration by inhalation? Describe how the molecules of such a compound provide theses essential properties.

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about studying this course, but, am only doing AS Chem not Bio or Maths. I achieved A,A* in Bio and A Maths GCSE, do you think i would be able to cope?

Thanks & rep for any replies

You'll be fine.

I hadn't done any chemistry since GCSE (more than 5 years ago) and it was challenging, but not really that hard. They start you off quite gently, so by the time you get to some complicated stuff it seems not so complicated any more. And the molecular model kit you get with it is great fun!
Hi

I have just started this course - I have not done any chemistry since school which was way back in the 80's. I think I am going to find it hard going. I am also doing Sk 195 and SK183, those are ok but this one is going to take my slightly longer to get my head round I think.
Quick Question, how does the ECA work, i know its how you get assessed but is it something you can do as you go along or do you have to do it all at the very end?
I might do this in May depending on how I go with SK277. At least if I do decide to do it having a level 2 Biology course should help!

I did my ECA as I went along. I found it quite interesting that they released both the ECAs at the same time, so I could choose the one with the best questions for me... With S151 the second ECA wasn't available till the first ECA deadline had passed...

Hey

I think its just London forces because both molecules are non-polar. Serine is a smaller molecule than leucine so although London forces will still occur, there will be less.
