The Student Room Group

a death during exams...

the second day of my exams, a girl in my class died of a brain hemrage. It was so sudden. I was told and then 20 minutes later I had to go into an exam. The teachers told me to pull myself together, that Laura would want us to pass our exams, but somehow to me this seemed like such a inapropriate thing to say. How would they know what she wanted?

Throughout my exam she was all I could think about, history sources seemed so insignificant then. I heard later that the examination board would be told and that would be taken into consideration, but how would they do that? The teachers said they would mark us easier for the day we found out, but do they just assume that we would not be affected throughout the entire exam period? I was just wondering...I really think it affected my results, not that that is important. What do you think?

having a teacher say that is highly insensistive, all they want you to do is to do exams for league tables,
yes, they lower the grade boundaries for you but thats hardly a consolation,

sorry about what happened

Wow mate i'm really sorry for your loss, and welcome to TSR btw, also theres been so many things about what happens if someone dies in the exam, some people have said that everyone in the room gets an A*, or that you get your predicted results, or that you get an extra 20%

i think it is most likely to be the percent one as they give you 5% when a pet dies on the day of an exam. Unfortuantely they only taken into consideration for that one exam not all your exams.

Again i'm sorry for your loss.

I think the school should have waited until after your exams, it depends on how close you were to Laura mate, the school were a little insensitive if they told you just before an exam, then have the nerve to say "pull yourself together" stupid. RIP laura anyway.
what a shame :frown: was she a close friend?
i can understand how they would take it into consideration, but i don't know why the teacher had to tell you right before you took your exam!
You should get an extra 5-10%, maybe even more..that's generally what it is if someone dies. They may well even give you a lesser percentage for all the following exams too.

OMG that's awful, you must have all been so upset...
I don't know how I would have dealt with that but I know I wouldn't have been able to think straight after I'd been told. I think there is a system of adding on a certain percentage if something traumatic like this happens to students before they sit an exam. I agree with you though, that this is something that would affect everyone throughout the whole period of exams, not just one day. I suppose the reasoning behind it is that nobody could really prove how it was affecting everyone and some people might get uppity about so called "free marks" being handed out for every exam. Don't get me wrong, this is just my speculation on why it might be so. I think you all deserve for this to be taken into account when your exams are marked and I feel really sorry for you and your classmates. Best of luck

good 4 u 4 doin ur exams!!!
if anything that sudden happened b4 my exams i'd just refuse 2 do it.
my grandad died a week b4 one of my science modules last year, it hit me pretty bad but at the same time inspired me 2 do well.

i ended up gettin full marks, (dunno how, it was a really easy physics paper but still never expected to get full marks!), so i'm sure u'v done the best u cud hav in the circumstances.
schools can be so insensitive sometimes, as if u cud "pull urself together"
sorry 4 ur loss, all the best

Yeah thats right, dont you have to claim for the extra % yourself though? It'd feel wrong and taking advantage if you claimed to get more marks because a mate died. If the school are applying for it, then people who didnt like her will want more marks.

I think the school have to put a letter in with papers, explaining the situation, and the exam board decide what to do about it themselves.

Yeah, what i was trying to say though was people who didnt really know or like Laura would claim to get more marks as well, sickening. Because its a bit stupid giving everyone more marks.

i think because she didnt die in the exam room situations will be a lot different than if it was in the room because then technically everyone would in some way or other been affected, and the exam board will probably pick up on that
I'm so sorry tazziecs. It must have been horrific. Things like that really make GCSEs pale into insignificance, and I think your teacher behaved in a tasteless and disgusting manner to tell you what s/he did.

True true, i mean even people who didnt really know or like her would still be a bit taken back by it all, but thats nothing compared to her best mates.
i know this probably doesn't really mean much to you, but i just wanted to sat im soo sorry about what happened. and this would probably make me sound like right d*** and soo unsensitive, but you will get over it eventually, it happened to me before my year 9 SATs, not as close to them, but, i know how you are probably feeling, and once again, i am sooo sorry for your loss. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

That was the point i was trying to get Across, perosnally i wouldnt claim for more marks in an exam, wouldnt feel right, unless the school claimed for me.

its the exams boards way of saying sorry for your loss basically, its the least they can do, if they did nothing, there be some people complaining that when something happened the exam boards didnt care about them at all. It just a way to relieve some of the pressure from everything else going on around them
they come up with it because things like this do happen, and people get upset and cannot concentrate and so they do not do their best. the exam boards give extra % because they are actually are people and believe that things like this affect peoples marks and grades - in a weird way its their way of saying sorry
