I hope it isn't as bad as some people have said; I'm staying there next year rather than being around the corner from my classes.

Im sorry to tell you guys that yes, perry barr is pretty bad. I'm a student in my second year and I've experienced that once you're out of the student bubble of halls you end up in a really bad area of birmingham. If you live towards edgebaston way its not so bad but avoid handsworth and aston like the plague. I lived in heathfield road for a few months and the uni had to move me out.
p.s. don't use Midland letting and sales when finding your house for next year. They are incredibly bad, they dont care about you once they have your money, the houses are unsafe and nobody I know has had their deposit back from them.
Remember to ask the uni which companies you should use!
hope this helped! x

I wouldn't live there if you paid me

Lol i live there its ok i guess, perry bar is a bad area but not as bad as most surrounding areas Aston, nechells and alum rock.

you just got to make sure your not an easy target
its not as bad as some people make it out to be, my boyfriend stays at the coppice and i've never not felt safe going there. yer the area surronding may look rubbish, but the important thing is going to the uni thats the best for you, not which uni has the best surronding area.

I still dont think worrying about being mugged should be part of a university experience, especially as you're paying after all.
true but you could get mugged anywhere, even in your home town.. you just have to be wary of these things

NO IT ISN'T. its looks **** but its mostly students and families that live having walked the length and width of it several times at various dodgy times of the night and not getting mugged attacked ect...

i have been told by my mates from brum that it used to be a bad area and though it has changed the reputation has stayed with it. it looks like crap and some interesting charecters in onestop but its fine, if you want somewhere that looks nice but isn't a great area go the city centre. perry barr is the reverse.

I've been living in Perry Barr since September and it's pretty harmless, there are certain areas around Perry Barr that you shouldn't walk around by yourself but that's it really.

If it's bothering you then i wouldn't go there, not worth spending thousands of pounds to live in a dodgy area you dont feel safe in, just go to a campus uni where you know you will be safe.

+ lets face it UCE isnt the best uni, surely there is better places you can do your courses at.

I have an offer for Primary Education at City North Campus for Sept 2010, any advise on accomodation would be great...I can't decide if I want to live on campus in Perry Barr or live at one of the city centre halls!
Ive lived here for a year and its totally fine. Both campus's are perfectly safe with secuirty and everything. Its like what the person previously said...you could get mugged anywhere

awful logic

you could get shot anywhere, but that doesn't mean you're going to take a stroll around Afghanistan does it?
I grew up in Perry Barr but went to Leeds University. I think that there are a lot of bad press about Perry Barr as a whole and some are justified.

I never experienced any problems whilst growing up, however, I believe that the university student population are seen as easy targets by some bad individuals. Which is a shame for the local area as I believe the student population has brought commerce especially to one stop, tesco and private housing.

It is a good idea for the police, student union, the local MP, BCU and local business to work together to tackle crime against the student population. Who knows we might even get an improved and safer local night life around the BCU campus.
I live in Perry Barr right now and cannot tell you how much I absolutely love it in these halls.
The uni, Coppice, and Oscott Gardens are in a bubble; you are safe and I've walked from the train station (which is past One Stop) at 11pm on my own and not felt nervous. The only time I did was when I first ventured into Perry Barr itself in search of an off-license at around 10pm on a Saturday night. Although I was with my friend, older men stop and say pervy things to you which I really do not like. Although this is not Perry Barr's fault, but I still refrain from going into Perry Barr itself, One Stop is about as far as I would walk. Or Tesco's, but make sure you're with at least one or two friends! Aston is worse than Perry Barr.

Does anyone know if the uni owned houses are actually on campus or are they in some dodgy area? Also..does anyone know the deadline for accomodation applications?
