What's Mile End, London like?

I am highly considering applying to Queen Mary as I would love to be based in a London University.

I have visited, Imperial, LSE, KCL, Royal Holloway, and London Met, and decided that Imperial and Met were not for me, and picked the others to apply. (In my spoiler you will see I applied to Surrey, the place is nice, but it's a fall back choice out of London). I have used 4 out of my 5 choices.

I have yet to Visit Queen Mary, but drove past its Mile End campus on the way to visit the other London Universities. It was quite early in the morning, and difficult to get a feel for the area. I already have the entry requirements to study Mathematics there.

So TSR, what is MILE END like? Is it like the stereotype we assume of East London? They don't have an open day soon, so I have no way of telling.Should I apply there?

Thanks in advance.

Hi mate.

I made this post a while back, it has pics of QMUL and the surrounding areas, as well as crime stats and stuff.

Mile End is fine, in fact compared to many other central London unis it has a much lower amount of crime.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

By all means apply to Queen Mary, but Mile End and East London generally just isn't nice.
its very ethnic, lots of asians, lots of blacks , the odd white or two etc.
bit of yobbish trouble/gang related stuff
but all in all its a decent place to live but dont expect westminster or chelsea.
very good transport links.
lots of kebab houses, asian restaurants

no one should bother you.
but it doesn thave your murders gun crime etc that you might see in places such as brixton or hackney and the streets arent disgusting although again, not exactly south kensington
but east london to say it isnt nice is to dismiss the rudimetary culture o flondon it self. it has lots of exploring places, walk down mile end youll see, if you wanna live in that oliver twist feel of things, go there, although it is more bombay than good day sir thesedays!!
but a great place to live.
oh ...and if it helps, george galloway is the mp ( i think)
Someone got set on fire in Mile End park last week. Other then that it's fine. :top:

It looks pretty rough and not the most appealing of places to look at, but its not really not too bad in terms of crime and whatnot. The uni is pretty close to the tube station as well if you'll be commuting from accomodation that's not nearby (not really sure what the situation with is with QM accomodation, the only people i know there are living at home). But yeah, not recommended if you want a nice looking area but its really not as bad as people make out, plus its a pretty well regarded uni.

All undergraduate accomodation is on campus...no need to commute.
It's absolutely vile, being in east London. Urghh the thought of east london fills me with nausea it is absolutely disgusting and uncultured full of criminals and chavs. Royal Holloway is much nicer, the building is pretty, and its in Surrey which is hot.
its actually not a bad place to be my bf was there for a while (living) but not any more to unrelated reasons but from what I have seen of it is actually not too bad as people say it is.

As someone who's been a student a qm for 6 years it's clear from some of these posts the person writing them has never been to or lived in mile end.

The area is a great location to acccess central london, shorditch, greenwich canary wharf etc as it's bang in the middle. There are 24hr buses from most places in london making it easy to get home at night and the tube links are great. Rent is cheaper than many areas of london. Victoria park is one of the biggest in london and i run there on my own a lot and have never had problems. The area is very diverse with places like brick lane providing you with the best curries around. The uni itself has brand new on campus accomodation and a new student's union.
It is an inner city university so it would be niave to think there is no crime but with 6 years living in mile end and bow i've had very few problems.

Just what they said it does have its once in a blue moon gangs walking together looking intimidating but as long as you actt blind and deaf to them nothing happens.

Plus, you have mile end train station, central line is fairly reliable too and its around the corner and buses work all the time.

What? You have obviously never been there.

Just down the road from Queen Mary are the mansions of Victoria Park, the townhouses of Grove Road.

Then the other direction the penthouse appartments of Shoreditch.

In short you have no idea what you are talking about.

Pffft the townhouse probably have thousands of flats inside them and honestly who would want to live in Shoreditch bar little northern bohos and Nouveaux essexians.
Anyone here planning on taking up Computer Science at Queen Mary?

I agree with all this, and Brick Lane/Shoreditch area is brilliant for shopping and nights out.

But Brick Lane really, really doesn't do the best curries, at all. Most of them are awful places. Brick Lane is good for curries if you want a Tikka Masala and a load of beer, I guess.

I'm studying it here right now.
I stayed at QM for 2 weeks whilst working in London over the summer. I found the area fine during the day but a little dodgy (especially walking alone back from the tube at 11/12 at night). I personally wouldn't want to go Uni there because of this, but visit it for yourself and see

I was staying during the summer and I'm sure it has a totally different feel in term time when students are around xx

A really good friend of mine did it there in his first year, then switched to UCL in his second.

/Useless comment.
Mile end is a **** hole! End of.
