What's Mile End, London like?

It's one of those areas that looks like an absolute ******** outside the campus itself but the looks are deceptive. It's really not that dangerous at all, I havn't had any trouble at all here and I've walked through the area at like 3/4am on my own sometimes and not encountered a thing.

Yes it's not Bloomsbury but it's also much much cheaper and it takes no time whatsoever to reach central LDN by the tube. Also if you like Fried Chicken places you're set, about my single biggest dislike of the place is that the local Subway is one of those Halal joints, so I can't have a Chicken and Bacon ranch  and when this is one of my biggest problems with that area that tells you everything.

Although I was outside The New Globe on Thursday and there was a little trouble, some massssive asian dude started squaring up to some student and threatening to beat him up rambling on about how this was 'our end' and this was 'our' England and how us students weren't in 'our' England anymore. Which would have been quite funny if the dude wasn't built like a brickwall.

And lol @ London Met being amongst those other London Unis you mentioned. Met isn't much more than a glorified sixth form :s-smilie:

My visit to Met consisted of... "Look there it is....nah it's not for me!" as I drove past.

A friend of mine went, and said it's ****.

It was only a looker.

And to another poster... I don't have the grade and cannot achieve them for UCL.

Ahh my hometown. To be honest cos I've grown up around here I don't think I can see what other people see about it. Yeah, it's not Chelsea but it's not terrible either. Yeah, there's crime but you're unlikely to be involved unless you're in a gang too.

I think it would be a pretty good place to live as a student, hop on the 205 to shoreditch and have a great time - it's got to be better than hoards of central london students going to the roxy on wednesday night, anyway.

The 25 goes along Mile End aswell

I know, the A11 goes right through Mile End. What with the A11 being "Mile End Road".

Yeah it's safe so long as you don't get mixed up in gangs (hardly think that's likely), much like many parts of London. It's not the most scenic part of London, so don't go expecting West End type surroundings but it's ok and has got better even since I started with the uni expanding and new private halls being built across the road. I've walked through it alone, pissed off my head @4am and had no problems. I've never had a problem myself in two years of East London.

Camden and especially Shoreditch are really easy to get to and central (Oxford Street) is about 15 mins on the Central Line. The thing to remember about Mile End is that all London students, unless mummy and daddy are super rich, tend to have to live in pretty crappy run down areas in 2nd and 3rd year anyways. It's just part of the London uni experience, even those that go to UCL et al. So it's really not that bad as long as you're street smart and you accept that after first year your experience will be very urban. QMUL is not the place for you if you want to go to a traditional rural rolling fields and ancient buildings kinda university.

For reference I come from a pretty safe, picturesque and sleepy tourist resort, so it's not like I'm used to urban settings. In fact Mile End is pretty much the opposite to what I'm used to but I havn't had problems with it.

No probs, if you're from Manchester it shouldn't be too much of a culture shock for you. Mile End is pretty shabby but it's nowhere near as bad as some mollycoddled kids on here make it out to be, plus the actual university campus is really nice and the accomodation is brilliant for university standards.

Not the nicest, but not that bad. Someone said 'bit shabby' earlier, which sums it up pretty well.

It does have probably the best military surplus shop in the country though - Silvermans. Always used to get my kit there.

If you dont mind seeing crowds of bengalis and pakistanis (me for one) everywhere, then you should be fine. Its really good for socialising as well, there's that e3 club right next to mile end station were you could down every friday night n have n awesome time lol..oh and there's hidden sheesha bars almost everywhere. You can never get bored...
I live like 10mins away from qmul in bow, i have so for the past 10yrs so i know the area quite well.
Keep your wits about you if you're on your own at night but besides that it's not that bad. Of course it looks terrible and loads of Gs live there but you'll only get into bother if you look and act like a bit of a mong. Like anywhere else not so glamourous I guess.
