I fail to understand why threads like this and http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=22197178&posted=1#post22197178 pop up.

It's what you make of it, it's not Liquid, it's a halls of residence. There aren't 500 people strong parties every night at Richardson Road, regardless of what urban fokelore you may have heard. Why people talk of 'the parties' as though they are an actual object, let alone worry about not being part of/invited to them is beyond me. You'll be part of whatever your mates are doing, whether that's at Richardson Road or wherever else, believe it or not there's not a guestlist for Richardson Road and people may get funny if you roll up at their flat looking for 'the parties'.

If you want to stay in and get pissed you can do that at Castle Leazes, Henderson Hall, Victoria Halls or whatever else Newcastle are peddling nowadays, or you can go out round the town - whatever floats your boat.

Hows about making your mates at York go out more often? Moving universities for such a frivolous reason seems daft to me.
Basically there are parties at all of the halls. Just choose the one you like the look of and want to live it. Marris House is nicer than Ricky Road but it is very small the rooms are tiny.
Oh also - I don't think you'd be very likely to get marris house it tends to get snapped up by the gap year students

I'm on a gap year  . Why is it so popular with gap year students?
It's not that it's popular with gap year students it's just that's it's popular in general because it's a nicer and slightly quieter place to live than Ricky Road but right next to Ricky road close to the university etc. Lot's of people apply there and for that reason it gets filled up quickly with gap year students as you lucky people get first pick of the accommodation! I have a friend on my course staying there and she says it's packed with gap year students, she's even one herself.
Can anyone who stays there tell me what it's like? Was thinking of putting Marris House first and Ricky 2nd... Im on gap year.

i'm on a gap year and have put marris first and ricky road second too!
Im living in ricky road at the moment and absolutely love it! theres always something going on and ive made so many friends in the past year..i have a friend who lives in marris house and in my opinion it just doesn't compare..also some of the flats in marris (blocks 35-37) are not refurbished and a bit run down. marris and windsor terrace are also very popular with foreign exchange students (only two other students in my friend's flat are english) I'd say for the best first year experience, ricky rd all the way!!
