I wanted to do that course, but I change my mind. because you cannot work in the UK with that qualification

Reply 2

I don't know if any of you realise, but that course is actually ilegal...well, not yet. In four years time (september of 2013) they are going to exile anyone with this qualification because it teaches you things no one should know...
I'd think again if i were you

Thanks for all the info. Guess I'll just stick with biomed and then maybe go to a real med-school.
Again, all replies much appreciated. Maybe someone else will stumble into this and be enlightened.

How does this differ from ending year 3 biomed at St. Georges uni london and transfering directly into year 4medicine where you start clinical placements until the end of year 5. Isnt it just that this program is abroad and you cannot come to the UK and practice without passing even more exams?

You only do 2 clinical years at the end of your 3 biomed years. I guess that's where all the problems come from too.
Could you link the biomed course with direct transfer to med school?

I would have thought after graduation and passing those required exams in whatever country you wanted to study you would have to do a further 2 years as 'junior' or whatever after the 3 year (biomed) 2 years (at UHSA) which would make it the same as a UK uni? :s-smilie:

It is an odd course, seems like they have filled in the 'gaps' such as physiology by making the students who want to apply attend summer school. Theres always a lot of stigma on these boards against medicine degrees from countries other than the UK, we dont even have the best health care here ......... i wanna study in cuba lol.

To OP probs best to go a biomed route in UK and try graduate if your sure you cannot get in undergrad.

I am also thinking about doing that course. So as the bottom line I would like to know: "Once you complete the course and the rotations will you become a doctor?". I would really like some one to shed light on this matter. I have heard that the MD is actually a diploma mill and others have said that you can be licensed. I am just so confused on this matter. I was also thinking if UHSA is not legit then how come LMU have actually joint forces with them. Anyone? Thank you

What I know about that course is: I was meant to do it last september but I didn't because I of the delay of the tutor to offer me a place. Now I change my mind because, actually with a medecine degree in Antigua you are not gonna be eligible to work in the UK, You will need futher exams and course to be able to practice as a GP in the UK. And if you start the course, they is no way to change you have to go up to end of the 5th year.
Now I am simply waiting for january intake to start a simple BSC biomed.
Hope I was useful.

Thanks for that. I heard that with an MD from Antigua you cannot actually practice medicine in America and the degree is actually a diploma mill ( worthless). But what do you mean that you can't get out of the course. Do you have to stay for the 5 years. I heard you can stop after 3 years and get your biomedical science degree from London metropolitan. Thing is no one has actually yet graduated from this course so thats why I think there is little feedback from it.

From what I understood, you're better off doing a Biomed degree, and then go for graduate entry medicine. It's not easy, but it's the way to do it.

Good afternoon to all

The Biomedical Sciences pathway to MD is a program that has been delivered by LMU and UHSA for around three years. UHSA has graduates currently registered in the GMC.

I had to react to all this information posted here which is misleading and its wrong.

I am the Vice President of Institutional Advancement & International Affairs of the University of Health Sciences Antigua. I am available to answer any questions about the program and our school.

Cheers!

There used to be a few minor problems with the recognition of its very fine dental and medical degrees in the past ( see the urls below ).
Can I assume that they been resolved satisfactorily ?

¨Licensing

Degrees conferred by UHSA are not accepted for the licensing of physicians in some jurisdictions.

United States
Alabama includes "University of Health Sciences Antigua, St. Johns (Antigua), Dominican Republic" in a list of
"Colleges of Medicine or Schools of Medicine [which] are not approved
by the Board for applicants for certificates of qualification pursuant to the authority of [Alabama State Law]"

California list "University of Health Sciences Antigua, St. John's" as disapproved since 1995,
and "neither education completed at, nor diplomas issued by, [UHSA] will be accepted toward meeting the requirements for training and/or licensure in [California]."

Indiana includes "Antigua University of Health Sciences" on a list of disapproved medical schools.
Disapproved by the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana as of 12/05/2002."

Texas lists "University of Health Sciences Antigua, Antigua" in a list of "Institutions Whose Degrees are Illegal to Use in Texas"
as defined by Texas State Code 61.302(11)

Controversy and criticism
Consumer advocates have been reported as referring to University of Health Sciences Antigua as a diploma mill.
The University of Health Sciences Antigua-School of Medicine was listed by the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) in a 2004 article which concluded that
At their worst, international medical schools take unfair advantage of desperate students, by accepting candidates who are woefully unprepared for the rigors of medical education, the USMLE, or the practice of medicine."

Kansas has filed suit against a dentist for using the title "M.D." without complying with state licensing requirements after obtaining a
medical doctorate through an accelerated 18 month course of internet classes, clinical rotations and lectures at UHSA.[10]¨

I am looking to study this course but I just wanted to find out if there were any bursaries I would be applicable for. As the ''MD'' is undertaken abroad, I am assuming that excludes me from the NHS bursary and any bursary from the Department of Health?

Also, if I wanted to work in the USA after I graduated would I need to take a licensing exam? I know that the MD is approved by the GMC as some GPs I know are qualified with it. Any detailed information about finance, the process after graduation/clinical rotations and accommodation would be highly appreciated, thanks.

The university of Wolverhampton is also offering the same course. I've been searching it and feedback seems to be mixed with some people saying it is a scam. I'm confused as if it was a scam why has London Met and Wolverhampton Uni joined forces with UHSA? Also, London Met and Wolverhampton Uni are not the best uni's around which worries me

Why is the course still running in 2016 then?...

Seeing as your the vice president, I am hoping you can clear the misunderstandings. Can you guarantee that a MD degree achieved from UHSA would allow UK students to practise as doctors within the UK without any further examinations?
Can you also confirm that the degree is approved by the GMC within the UK?
Do UHSA graduates have to undergo further training to practise as doctors within the UK?

Can you explain this course more clearly
