I've never really understood vanity. Surely if people are so obsessed with their image they would try and avoid vanity given that it's such an unattractive quality. Would someone care to explain/dissolve this apparent paradox.
Lol. I'm incredibly vain. I just enjoy it, if I'm honest. I love spending ages getting ready, wearing nice clothes, doing my hair nicely.
I think vanity can go a bit far, but at least it shows you're taking pride in your appearance. That's the way I try to justify the fact that I'm such a girl, anyway!
Acceptable, low grade vanity is likely to be: gosh, better wash my face Total twaddle is likely to be: no I will not play netball, or i shall muss my hair!
Oh, lol, tha latter is me I'm afraid. At school, in winter, I always used to walk up the school drive instead of across the field, so I didn't get my trousers muddy and wet.
Vanity is like a disease. Even if someone can acknowledge that they are vain, it is very hard to stop thinking of how they look. I am very vain. I wish i wasn't, but i am. And it actually wasn't that long ago that i realised that the way i look consumes my mind for most of the time i'm awake. I really can't stop it though.
Acceptable, low grade vanity is likely to be: gosh, better wash my face
and high grade is: Gosh, better wash my face, actually no,m because then people will see it in its full hideosity; I better consider this for some inordinate amount of time while doing f*ck all else.
I suppose me (a boy) wearing makeup and washing my hair twice a day and constantly going to mirrors to check it would fall into the chronically vain category. Such a shame. Why have I turned out this way!?!
well that's okay - muddy wet trousers are a source of discomfort, not just looking filthy I don't think many people would gladly sit in class wet, cold and dirty.
Precisely!!!!!!!! That's what I told all the ming ding's who came in blathered up to the eyeballs looking like s*it. Then there was me, looking fabulous, as ever !
next year I WILL catch you without makeup on and it WILL be posted.
you're vainer than me and I'm a girl
I don't even wear makeup most of the time !
LOLLLLLLLZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!! You do that baby!! Just you tryyyyyyy!!! You won't stand a chance! I always look fabulous. I always look thebest.

yes, I mean, after this post I just have this urge never to meet you.
What's the point in wearing make-up every day? I have better things to do with my time and if people are going to judge me on not wearing eyeshadow, frankly I have better things to do than talk to them.

Errm, to answer your question, it's because the type of 'image' vain people are interested in is a physical one - it's solely what they look like. Vanity is highly unattractive in a personality, which is an aspect of a person which vain people generally put beneath looks.

Oh blah blah, whatever. I don't think it's really fair to say "what's the point in wearing make-up every day?" just because you don't do it yourself. It's not like it takes long to put on, you don't have to put much on and for some people it makes them feel better.
And, I agree, people shouldn't judge others for not wearing make-up - just because someone wears make-up every day doesn't mean they're a self-obsessed ditz.

I just find it, well, sad, that people need to alter their appearance to feel better. Sure it's nice once in a while, but every day? It's a tool, not a crutch.

Sad, perhaps, but everyone has issues with themselves and do things to feel better. People lose weight to feel better, not only for their health, but because they don't want to be a fat sweaty ming mong. Part of the attraction of things such as losing weight, going to the gym and toning up is so you look better in your clothes and stuff - it's all vain.
Make-up can enhance people's facial features when applied correctly.
Oh I don't deny that it can. But partly it's because I'm lazy, partly it's because at school I told myself even if I did waste my time putting on makeup every day like the "popular" girls did I still wouldn't look like them so there was no point. If people physically can't leave the house/be seen in public/by their gf/bf without makeup, I think it's either very vain or indicative of a deep lack of confidence.

Yeah, definitely. One of my friends applies full makeup and does her hair to go to the gym! I find that ridiculous, when I asked her why, she said "well you never know who you might see". That, to me, shows extreme vanity and lack of confidence. I agree, things go too far when people can't go out or be seen without a plastering of Maybelline.
However, I still uphold that wearing make-up cannot really be branded to be synonymous with lack of confidence or self esteem. Conversely, it is often those who choose not to wear it that lack the confidence.
