Lost half a stone, gone up a dress size - WTF?

I lost half a stone recently, and my school trousers, jeans, and other trousers have become really baggy, to the point where I can zip them up and then pull them down to my ankles with ease. I tried on the strapless prom dress I wore last Christmas a couple of nights ago, and was able to fasten it, move it around and also pull it down to my ankles.

So I went into town today to buy a new prom dress, thinking I'd need a size smaller. Not only did a size smaller not fit, but my usual size was too small for me - WTF? I could pull the zip up on all of them, but the button at the top wouldn't close around my chest, and not one of them fitted, and I tried on about a dozen.

I felt close to tears and came home empty-handed. A size bigger is far too big, but my normal size suddenly doesn't fit me, even though all my clothes are baggy now. What do I do? Do I have to lose another half stone in three weeks before my prom?

Does every shop's clothing sizes change wildly between each shop? Some of the shops I tried weren't ones I'd usually go into; the dresses in Quiz would zip up, but my C-cup chest was too big for them at the top, for example :frown:

sizes vary shop to shop and even across garments in those shops, you haven't "gone up a dress size" at all if your old clothes are too big for you now.

just shop around, find something you like and if it really comes to it buy something a little large and have it taken in.

Maybe its because of your boobs.
Even though your smaller overall your boobs haven't shrunk so you can't fit into the smaller sizes.
If your boobs have shrunk though...
:iiam:

As poster above has said, clothes sizes vary even within the same shop, don't feel discouraged
Perhaps your body shape has changed and your boobs are bigger?
Anyway, I don't think losing half a stone in three weeks sounds healthy, try other shops? Or buy a bigger size and have it adjusted a wee bit.

close to tears over going up a dress size.... come on.

Diffeent shops, to my knowledge, seem to differ in terms of what size someone is in each (according to female friends)

Don't worry...you havn't gone up a dress size, different clothes have different fittings, its natural to change size from shop to shop.

Also don't worry about the size you buy, just wear whats comfortable for you, no-ones going to know what size you've bought!!

Cheer up!!

If I went to the effort of losing half a stone and it looked like I'd gone UP a dress size, I'd want someone's blood!

Maybe you've bulked up and got a bit more muscle? However if the dresse's you were trying on were boned/tailored or you have a big bust then it's usual. I had to go up a size for my prom dress :sigh:

A) Prom dress sizes are weird. I had to buy a 4, and have it taken -in a lot- for mine. I'm a 6-8, not a 2 as it ended up.

B) If its a proper prom dress retailer, they'll do any edits for less than £30.

Thank you for your replies. I felt upset earlier, but I feel better now

Now that you mention it, I have been doing weight-training :o:

The sizes in New Look fitted, but they didn't look formal enough. I tried them on in Monsoon and they were just a bit too tight  When I was in Quiz I really did feel like crying, I'd gone in with five lovely dresses and came out after trying on two, and the lady was like "Do you not like them? :frown:"

But why would you care if you know you've lost weight and are smaller? :s-smilie:

OP, like others have said, different shops, different size measurements. Also, you are 'suffering' the 'problem' of losing weight, but not losing your boobs. Also, prom/formal dresses always seem to be a bit weird to me. I got very frustrated buying mine.
Stop being a cry-baby and go explore! One of the things most people have to do when they've lost weight is try different shops and different styles.

There you go then . Also bear in mind that New Look uses totally different materials to Monsoon and monsoons clothes tend to be a lot more structured. Don't worry OP. I'd be pissed off aswell

How does Kelly Brook, a size 10 and frigging E-cup, fit into beautiful dresses and I can't fit into different sizes? :s-smilie:

Will I ever fit into Monsoon dresses? Will I have to lose some more weight first? :frown:

What size are you currently? How much do you want to lose? How tall are you? What your body type? It's all dependent.

They are tailored to perfection before she puts them on.

It's probably the dress and not you, if all your other clothes are baggy.
Dress sizes are REALLY small.

(I once watched Don't tell the Bride, I know, I'm cool, and a usual 8 wore a slightly altered 14!)

Clothes sizes can vary massively from shop to shop, it's unlikely you have actually gone up a whole dress size.
