Does that justify his actions then? If not, what was the point of making this "point"?
    It was in response to:

Lots of countries managed to tranform themselves from backwaters into decent, developed nation states through market economics without the iron-fisted tyranny
The fact remains that not a single country in Latin America managed to transform itself economically while using the democratic process. You should know that I don't engage in debates about morality, especially on an international level where it does not exist.

What I meant was, there have been countries outside of Latin America that have developed without needing dictatorial-committed crimes against humanity. If the Latin Americans dedicated more time to capitalist democracy than communist despotism, they probably could too.

Too bad that capitalism is associated with authoritarianism in Latin America, which is the reason that Columbia is the only government in South America with a right-wing government.

Surely they must look to the north from time to time and see what they could have?

I suppose the marxian/medieval idea that one group of people can only prosper if they rob another is too embedded for them to ever see the USA & Canada as anything more than voracious parasites feeding upon them.

Pinochet led an economic transformation. He reduced state participation in the economy, kept wages low, and cut welfare and other benefits. He opened up the economy, including the financial sector, to competition, and sought to boost exports. This strategy worked, and brought continuing growth, particularly in the second half of the 1980s.

True he had a number of communists killed. But they were difficult times, Chile risked becoming communist with all the terror and poverty that brings. He did the right thing and if I was given the choice between his Chile and Cuba or the USSR, id chose Chile everyday, at least people could make some real money in his country.

This is what makes me fear for the future of the West,

"True he had a number of communists killed. But they were difficult times,"

most of the Conservative party, **** - even the top brass in the Armed Forces would piss their pants and lock themselves in a cupboard if somebody said this in their presence.

All are richer thanks to a trickle down effect. Its not in our interests to make the poor poorer, as they won't be able to buy products. A human being who dosen;t think about their self interests is nothing more than a sacrificial animal. If people never thought about their selves we'd all be dead.

People did what they were told out of self interest i,e they did not want to be killed. They valued their lives. Seen as equal? It was a corrupt regimes which rewarded lackies and persecuted jews and gays etc. Yuri went into space knowing that people like you would remember his name.

Your lack of basic knowledge is pathetic. See http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclop...d-Soviet-Union

    Specifically:

As Israel was emerging as a close Western ally, the specter of Zionism raised fears of internal dissent and opposition. During the later parts of the Cold War Soviet Jews were persecuted as possible traitors, Western sympathisers, or a security liability. The Communist leadership closed down various Jewish organizations and declared Zionism an ideological enemy. The only exception were a few token synagogues. These synagogues were then placed under police surveillance, both openly and through the use of informers.

As a result of the persecution, both state-sponsored and unofficial anti-Semitism became deeply ingrained in the society and remained a fact for years: ordinary Soviet Jews often suffered hardships, epitomized by often not being allowed to enlist in universities or hired to work in certain professions. Many were barred from participation in the government, and had to bear being openly humiliated. Soviet media usually avoided using the word "Jew," and many felt compelled to hide their identities by changing their surnames.

Furthermore the last commnet indicated his selfishness, he wanted to be remembered. That was obvious to any simpleton.
