Job prospects, what jobs with a geography degree?

If I was considering doing a geography degree, what sort of jobs would be open to me at the end? Has anyone here done a geography degree and what job do you do now? What are your career intentions when your have finished you degree?

I don't really know much about what is available at the end. A Geography degree is not out of the question for me but I have to make "informed decisions".

Is there a such thing as a professional geographer? Like there's professional chemists and physists etc etc for example...

Apparantly, one of the biggest areas that geographers go into is accountancy! But I think that's just because a large proportion of ANYONE goes into accountancy.

Anywho, yes there are "professional geographers" - geography is a key path to research. The thing is is that many people who did geography degrees aren't called "Geographers". They're called "oceanographers" or "ecologists" or "social researchers" or "urban designers" or whatever. Geography is such a broad degree that covers A LOT of stuff that people have to specialise in certain areas.

Going from a Geography degree could take you to research in areas such as:
Oceans
Ice-shelves
Climate
Atmosphere
Ecosystems
Pollution
Population problems
Health
Politics
International relations
Urban structure & theories
Change in social structures
etc
etc
etc!!!

As for "normal jobs"...:
Geography teacher? :p:
Management
Office work generally
Personnel/HR
erm....other stuff?

Hope some of this helps lol

you can do loads of stuff as geography has so many transferrable skills. u dont have to stay in the field of geography. many people, like dobbs said, work in other areas. finance is popular these days i think ( i dunno why)
Yeah, accountancy is like *the* thing, lol. Wouldn't ever get me doing that...

Ditto.....really don't want to end up in an office job!! Have no idea what I do actually want to do, but as long as it involves travel then I'm sure I'll be happy

SELLOUT!!!!!

You can't do a geography degree then go on to work in finance!! And you most certainly cannot earn lots of money!! :p:

I wouldn't mind an office job right now! Infact, I wouldn't mind ANY job right now, lol, but after my degree...hmmm, have no idea!
I've been in an Office job during my gap year. I really don't want to do it again when I leave uni, not unless it offering a hell of a lot of money.

I’d want to do something that helps people or the environment; a job I find rewarding and enjoy is what I’ll be looking for. I'd love to deal with people on a face to face basis. I am sure a Geography degree will hopefully give me the opportunity to find something along those lines.

One could be some kind of consultant - like "environmental consultant" or something - for either the gov't or a company, maybe? But of course, a goeg degree can be like a history degree, for instance - more to show you are clever and give you some transferable skills, rather than to train you for a particular job.
