Most companies advertise-look in the job centre, local newspapers, etc for vacancies. Some shops also stick little posters in the windows or around the shop, so look out for these. Alternatively, you can walk into a shop and ask if they have any vacancies and/or for a job application, although you might not be guaranteed the job this way. Usually when a job is advertised they'll ask you to send in a CV and cover letter. Try big supermarkets, usually you can get an interview pretty quickly for these, but it is dependant on whether or not they have vacancies. Also, if you get rejected, don't give up trying-there'll be a job out there somewhere for you!

Good luck! I'm currently in the process of trying to get a new job (although I want permanent full time, not just a summer job, since I left college a while ago, and uni isn't for me). It's all fun and games!

Hi,

Firstly, although some of what Silly Wench said (that's her name, I'm not insulting her lol!) is true, but in some places she's wrong.

I, as a 20year old student have plenty of experience looking for work lol! What I can tell you now is that being 17 and looking for a random job in a shop will *NOT* require a CV! If you go into anywhere....Morrisons, Asda, Tescos, Woolworths, Wilkinsons, etc etc....and ask if they have any jobs, they'll either say "No" or "No, but here's an application form to put you on record incase we ever do have vacancies" or "Yes, here's an application form"

Most places won't ask for CVs. Only time you will need them is if you actually write to companies to ask for work, then you need to send a covering letter (who you are, why you want to work for them, hours you are available, contact details, etc) and your CV. - MOST IMPORTANT THING HERE IS YOUR COVERING LETTER - they read this first, it's all about first impressions. If your covering letter catches their eye they will read on, if not, they'll throw the whole thing in the bin and you'll never hear from them again!!

Hope this helps a bit

I've handed in alot of CVs for jobs, probably more so than what employers have asked me to complete an application, although that's going by what's in the jobcentre. Usually from there you either fill in an application there, or ring jobseekers direct, which usually tells you the company's name and address, and tell you to send a CV and cover letter there.

Sorry if I've been misleading, or talked a load of rubbish - my intentions were good.

I got my job in Superdrug on Oxford Street by going and giving in my cv. I was 17.
this is the question i was thinking. i printed about 5 CV's im going to try and hand them in to various shops. i was uncertain about walking into a shop and just handing in My CV and asking for an application (i dont know why).

I didn't say you wouldn't need them at all....take a few along with you just incase, but in my experience, the majority of places will either give you an application form or right out tell you that they have no places and that's the end of it!

But again, that's my experience and so don't take everything from that! Obviously there will be places which take CVs, so do take a few along with you! I think it also highly depends on where you go, I'm sure in general large supermarket chains won't take CVs because they don't give a crap about your GCSEs/A-levels, etc.
I usually give out/take a number of CV's in.

They get put behind the counter and may lay there for a couple of days before the Manager looks at them.

We must get 20-30 CVs/Applications forms each week/every 2 weeks and Im not sure if they even get looked at.
