OK I am going to die from all that pain if nobody replies soon :P Could it be perhaps because I am doing far too much at one time? I have only recently started exercising more frequently.

I'm no physiotherapist, but when I exercise an area that hasn't been worked out so much, it hurts. Take neurofen until it stops

Yes, take things progressively. It makes no sense to do anything to the max as soon as you start. It's not beneficial in anyway.

I do some basic exercises every morning. I have noticed that several hours after I do my push ups my muscles at the top of the chest hurt quite badly for a very long time. How do I stop that from happening?
OK I know these things are second nature to me (you're hearing this from a girl who's studied Human Physiology and Anatomy in her degree for two years running), but I can't resist helping you out here

Hmm, what you've prolly pulled a little is your pectoral muscles located in the chest area, see here: http://virtualastronaut.jsc.nasa.gov/textonly/act20/images/pectoral.gif

All you really need to do, apart from stay healthy and I guess take it easy for a bit, is stretch this area

This can be done in few ways, but one of the main or standard procedures for this is outlined below:

1. Stand in the middle of a door way with one foot in front of the other.

2. Bend your elbows to a 90 degree angle and place your forearms on each side of the door way.

3. Shift your weight on to your front leg, leaning forward, until you feel a stretch in your chest muscles.

4. Hold for 15 seconds.

5. Relax and return to starting position.

6. Repeat above 5 more times.

Hope that helps, and I hope you get better soon!

Human Physiology and Anatomy isn't as straight forward as you may think. You should try doing the prac exams  I didn't mind tho, for me it was interesting

And getting back to the topic, yeah it's usually sensible to wait a day before doing lots of pushups again - good to rest the muscles too! So yep, if you're trying to tone up, every second day should be fine, otherwise muscle overuse could occur :frown:

See here: > http://www.cs.umanitoba.ca/~mdonald/treats.html

Otherwise, great to see you're making the most of your holidays to do the things you want to do - happy toning! :p:
