does shaving/waxing/plucking make the hair grow back thicker

this is just something people keep telling, like my friend who says everytime she waxes or shaves her legs, the hair grows back thicker, and now she has to wax cos the hair is so thick ,
what about plucking eyebrows- can the same happen?
is there any truth to this?

Shaving yes - details in a thread somewhere ummmm.... =0(

It can look/feel thicker, but if anything the opposite occurs. In any cases where depilation occurs (removal of hair from the root) hair regrowth is usually thinner and finer over time. So this would include waxing/plucking and epilation but not shaving.

Hope that helps

That's right. Shaving makes it thicker, black and hard. I don't know about the rest but I heard that after you waxed, it comes back finer and lighter.
Shaving does (appear to at least) make hair grow back more thickly. I've only been waxing/epilating my legs for about 5 months though and already its growing back finer, which is so good because my skin didnt really like razors at all.

But in some bizzare kind of paradox if i pluck my eyebrows it grows back kind of darker, like if i accidentally pluck a blonde one from the edge of my eyebrow. Also made the mistake of doing my bikini line and came back all jaggedy and waaay darker. :frown: not nice...

You're right about waxing, plucking and epilation ( removal of the hair from the follicle). However, shaving leaves the hair root intact - so it merely re-grows.

shaving makes hair grow so much thicker and it comes back in a shorter space of time, but pulling the hair from the roots..waxing/epilating..it takes longer for the hair 2 grow back and hair is finer..

wow what the hell? this is just a myth, it doesnt grow back faster if you shave it, it just FEELS thicker because when you shave it you cut off the hair at an angle so leave a sharp point

just a myth!

I hate being a girl and having to ensure that I'm always smooth etc. It's painful, timeconsuming and costly-urgh!

to that id add that the shorter hair feels stiffer than a longer one anyway, and since the % growth rate of the hair remains the same, growth from a recently shaved hair will appear to be faster because its growing a greater proportion of its length per time, making people think omg shaving makes hair grow back like **** - but ofcourse its not growing any faster at all.

I have bee waxing my legs and underarms for nearly 4 years now and regrowth is half as light as when I started. I have it done every 4 weeks (which means a week of gross hairiness but it really is worth it) and I hope by the time I am 20-25 I will no longer need to wax my legs  (Because all the follicles will just be dead from all the abuse, yay!)

Get it done professionally though, cleaner and less risk of burns and is more effective than cold waxes, bleh.

I have this friends of mine, she had very fine legs, and the hair on her legs was considerably thin and added complexion.. which made it look better.. she insisted on shaving it... and she is resentful that she did... hehehe

you don't have to. it's your choice!

and shaving doesn't make the hairs thicker - as someone said, you're just making the ends of them blunt so they look that way, and they feel thicker because they're shorter and stubbly when they grow back.

I know you don't have to, but most people might think it was a bit yucky if we all walked around looking like gorrilas-We don't live in Southern Europe remember!
Also your boyfriend prob won't want a hairy girlfriend-it's not much of a turn on. And if you're trying to attract a guy then hairly legs won't do you any favours.

It's your body not those people who might think it's "yucky". personally, i do shave legs and underarms, but it's my choice, because i think it's more hygienic and feels nicer. southern europe has nothing to do with it!

I know a few girls who have hairy armpits - one has spent a lot of time in australia and it's more common not to shave over there. The other is my sister-in-law and i really don't notice it any more. and my brother must not find it a turn-off!

It is still your choice. i would hate to worry about what other people think so much i feel i have to change my body!

haha, because i wave my shaven legs around to attract men! my boyfriend just has to put up with it when i can't be bothered to shave, i'm afraid, and he hasn't run off yet! he's way hairier than me anyway (thankfully!) but if he did dump me because i had hairy legs, or someone wasn't attracted to me because of that, i wouldn't want to be with them anyway!
