For some of the subjects I'm doing next year, there are synoptic papers involved. I was just wondering what they actually are, cos they sound scary.

AS and A2 topics combined together to test your understanding of the whole syllabus.

They're not too bad, you just have to review AS notes and make sure you do lots of past papers to get used to the type of answers they are looking for.

Synoptics are exams that tests topics that you learn in your AS and A2 year. The exam will be based on decision making. Before the exam, you will have a pre-release material before you sit the exam. Use that to familiarise yourself with the case study. Furthermore, synoptics worth the most of the whole A-level (i.e. 20%).

That's not true. I haven't done any synoptics which have had pre-release materials, only a few do.

You have to make sure you learn everything from AS and A2 as you don't know what will come up.

I beg to differ :P, my physics synoptic was the one exam I was most stressed about, past papers for them are so hard, they don't just seem to include little brief bits from around the syllabus, but like sizeable chunks in considerable depth :P
