A friend of mine has a 'nerve trap' and I am too scared to ask him for details because all I know is that at any moment something could go seriously wrong and he would end up in a wheelchair.

That's quite non-discript. It could refer to an incidence of mild neuralgia (pain/numbness from a nerve, often because something is slightly pressing on it), through to a serious impingement of the nerve that could threaten the loss of the muscles etc the nerve innervates.

I have been trying to find out what exactly a 'nerve trap' is and how serious it can be...any ideas anyone?

you mean a trapped nerve surely, like when you hurt your back and a nerve gets trapped between the disc and bone

It's the latter that I am interested in learning more about...any suggestions?

That depends on the kind of information you're after - if you're after medicy kind of info - structures, function etc, then there are some very good, fairly basic books by the BMA - called 'ABC of...' There's on on the Spinal Cord, that from memory also covers peripheral nerves (nerves outside of the spinal cord).

If you're after reassurance/words of comfort, then there are probably a myriad of websites out there, but becareful - it's faily hard to predict prognosis with potential nerve damage. 2 people could have exactly the same problem, but not be affected to anywhere near the same degree. Also, if you're worried about your friend, do not underestimate the power of resilience that the human body has - and if things are bleak then your friend is going to need you, to know that you are there and to know that things haven't changed in your relationship - they'll still be the same person inside...

Hmm.. I was wondering about this, because my right foot keeps randomly going all cramped and weird (seizes up and feels like my toes are being wrenched apart), and someone said I might have a trapped nerve. Really need to go to the doctor...

Hey, thanks...(:
That was awfully sweet of you...I wish it could be as simple as you tried to make it!

It may not be anything but you should definitely go see the doctor, there is nothing worse than regretting not having gone later...
