WARWICK UNIVERSITY - Student/Night life?

So I'm real hyped about Warwick University right now! It seems brilliant. I've applied there for Mathematics in October 2010. I've yet to have a response to my application but I was wondering whether anyone who's studying/studied there could tell me what the student/night life is like? I hate to say it but it doesn't strike me as a university full of outgoing people :/ Please, tell me otherwise!

Well I'm a maths fresher here at the moment and for me there's no problems with the nightlife, compared to a city uni obviously there's less going on on campus, but as long as you're willing to go into cov/leam for a night out it's fine. Also you'll have a new (finished) SU building next year so it should be brilliant. The copper rooms which is the nightclub on campus has stuff on 4/5 nights a week, and everyday in freshers fortnight, with a good variety depending what you like, then theres the SU pub and a varsity pub (£1 drinks on thursdays) Cov has got good bars and clubs and so does leam. We've even been to Birmingham for a night out and obviously thats a huge city with loads to do. So basically if you want to have a good nightlife it's easy to do as long as you're willing to explore a bit.
Also I wouldn't say it's full of not outgoing people, must people I know aren't, obviously you get some people who are. Perhaps you get a few more people like that here, seeing as it's quite a good uni, but it's certainly not a problem, and you wouldn't hang out with those people anway :p:

Tbh, its what you make of it.

On campus, for me, it got a little boring with going to the Copper Rooms every week. I only really went on the freshers weekend (both days), Tinchy Stryders performance and a few Hustles (on fridays every other week). In my first week, I decided to go to Leamington and went to a club called Evolve. Its full of second and third years and is generally a good night out.

Ive been to Cov a handful of times. The first place I went to was Ignite and I didnt like it. The club looked old, carpetting etc..just ew! Kasbah on the other hand on fridays is generally a good place to go although overall, im not a fan of Cov as a whole.

Now the good stuff. We have this beautiful thing called UniExpress. They operate around 3/4 times a week. You pay on their website for transport there and back, entry + que jump. They go to all the big nights in places like Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, London. Last week for example, I went to Nottingham Oceanna but that same week they had Gatecrasher at Bham and Ministry of Sound in London.

Like I said, it is whatever you make of it. I go out around 2/3 times a week and have a good time..

I'm in my third year of a law degree at Warwick...

I would deffs echo the earlier sentiments re: it is what you make of it. You can't sit back and expect it to come to you at Warwick. It wont. That said I spent the first bit of my teenage years in London and the second half in Newcastle Upon Tyne.....and try as hard as I liked I will never "make it" anything like a night out in either of these two fine cities...sorry but the sheer number of times I've heard the spice girls mega mix here disqualifies it from being a truly great night out!

That said there are masses of clubs/socs on campus, some of which have really busy social schedules and joining a few of these to see if you get on well is something I would certainly recommend.
Uniexpress is a LIFE saver as far as nights out go, particularly as it goes to Birmingham. Apart from that Kasbah and lava in Cov are decent enough. As for Leam...loads of people love them but personally I find the two clubs in Leamington AWFUL (the music being my main complaint. Smack is the favourite of the 2 if I were forced to pick a favourite...!)

Odds on you will also make friends who hail from London....which means a cheap train fare to the Big Smoke and a night in their pad if you want to do a big night out!

The union is pretty good.....for a union anyway. Top B is a laugh and you tend to know most of the people there. The night on a Wednesday aimed at sports teams is great fun if you are one of the teams there "circling" (playing drinking games in a circle, imaginative name eh?!) but I reckon watching hundreds of drunk rugby/football/netball/hockey/cheerleaders/basketballers throw themselves about to journey/sweet child o mine covered in sticky drinks would be pretty cringe worthy if you turned up at 10 when the general admission to non-sports people really starts. Not really sure what happens at weekends now that I live off campus, but its probably quite mainstream poppy sounding if I had to guess.

All in all its about striking a balance.....a great degree or an amazing city life? Or a great degree with a slightly above average night life (which basically is what Warwick offers). For me the lack of distraction is a good thing.

As for typical "Warwick people"...there isn't one tbh...Ive met a real range....including really outgoing party animals and the obligatory bespectacled "geeks". I've still had some great times and met some lovely people though!

Lulu can I ask why you like Smack so much? It's tiny, great music but by around 11 it's impossible to move around.

Op, it's really what you make of it. There's nothing I can tell you the above posters haven't.

Just know that, if you want the best chance at a great social life, apply for Rootes. On your personal statement for accom. make sure they know exactly what you're looking for - i.e the quiet/lively crowd. If you get home at 3am every weekend usually, let them know so they can put you with the loud and sociable lot. If you want peace and quiet, let them know.

Ok cheers but if I'm honest, the campus sounds very isolated which I really don't think I'll like! Is there not any good clubs or things to do off campus? I don't think I could spend every other night going to the same couple of places on campus with the same faces!

Noo no nooo.....I PREFER smack to evolve.......they are both weak imo! I just find the music in evolve really bland and a bit irritating....its a much better set up as far as venue is concerned so it is deffs better for something like a big group outing (say a birthday/club social) as you don't lose each other....I just prefer the variety of music in Smack

Ahh right, I get you lulu.

Arctic, what were you expecting? Most 1st years at UK unis who are pretty sociable would go out about 3/4 nights per week.
At Warwick you have Top B on monday which is cheap drinks and so-so music, on wednesday if you play sports you'll be in a circle/pop all night (circles alone are quite entertaining and if you're not in a club you'll probably go to pop afterwards, which does a lot of thematic nights) on Thurs you have cheap drinks at the uni pub if you fancy it, Friday you'll probably go somewhere different/BIG like Kasbah or maybe evolve. Some Saturdays the union has very decent nights like Ministry of Sound etc. Otherwise you'll spend your nights doing work or sports or socs or kitchen parties i.e piss ups with no need to travel for entertainment. TheUniExpress do trips to Gatecrasher in Birmingham and other clubs in, say, Nottingham. I imagine the repetition is like with any uni, hell even Nottingham students tend to circle Ocean and GC a lot.

Point being: There is no shortage of decent things to do, if you're active.

Warwick uni is near leamington spa and coventry which have plenty of bars and clubs! And yeah, Smack does have better music than Evolve! Smack is also more full of students, because they do student nights and have cheap drink deals etc ! Birmingham isn't far away - lots to do there!

Sorry to say but most of this is incorrect. Rootes was my first choice ans my PS for accomo was all social. I said that I am a party animal and love socialising and meeting new people. I didn't put anything about my work life at all. Instead, I got Tocil and i must say I think it was for the best. Most of my friends live in Rootes, so I'm either in there or Jack Martin most of the time. I went out most days last terms to birms, cov and leam meeting loads of people along the way. I am always coming back at like 3am..... Conversely, some of my friends who wanted peace and quiet (put this all over their application) ended up getting Rootes. For some it wasn't even one of their choices. But yeah as the saying goes, Uni life is what you make of it. Just because you're in a sociable halls it doesn't mean you're a sociable person.

That's just my view anyway

I never said applying for Rootes meant you'll definitely get in..?

If you think about it logically, say 1500 people applied for Rootes this year because of more people applying to unis, and it can only house 1000. The allocation software fills up the 1000 then arrives at your application.. there's no space, thus it decides to put you in somewhere where there IS space (i.e Tocil). Had you got into Rootes, you'd probably have been with the people you said you're like.

Nor did I say that everyone in Rootes is very sociable (actually my warden told me they put a lot of int. students in Rootes this year to even it out).. but Rootes is quite hyped, and for that reason people follow the hype. Like you said, you spend a lot of your time in Rootes.

I have also applied to Warwick. Before i went to the open day i was quite certain i wanted my own bathroom etc.

But after going round Rootes and talking to students they really did hype it up and i decided that sharing a bathroom isnt much to pay for having a great social life.

Not sure about 3am every night but Im definitely not one to stay in either! Are there any inbetween ones?!

Halls like Cryfield, Claycroft, Westwood are quite inbetween. Jack Martin is an exception but generally the en suite halls are the quieter ones. Not sure why it tends to happen like that but it does (obviously there will always be a couple of exceptions.)

At the end of the day.....there will be great friends tp be found at Warwick.....you just need to get out there to find them!!

Claycroft is fab - we have amazing messy nights that end at 5am but we also have nights when we stay in and chill out in the kitchen or actually, shock horror, go to bed!
Reply 15
Is it annoying being that little bit further away from the union etc?!
Reply 16
Not at all. It's about five minutes! Plus we go out in Coventry and Leamington a fair bit anyway so it's not even that big of a deal.
Anyone been to the new Student Union yet?
Reply 18
Yeah. Not actually been out out but we went to the Terrace on Monday and had an explore today too. It's very nice from the outside in the dark, pretty! Unfortunately the cocktails were horrid, but I'm hoping they improve once the staff get better.

by your choice of on campus nights out i might assume that you like hip hop music, so just wondering, do you know if evolve plays a good amount of hip hop? havent been there yet. my bad if i'm assuming too much lol

Yh It does. It has it's own RnB and Hip Hop room!
