Hi guys, I was asked by my landlord to start paying rent by Cash last month. I realise he is on benefit...I am not sure whether he is declaring the rent as an income(not my position to ask) and paying in cash certainly allows him not declaring. Do I have an obligation to report to HM Revenue in this case?
Will I get in trouble if he is found for benefit fraud by not declaring the rent income?:s-smilie:
Thanks

Why would you report the guy?
GRASS much?

Because he's getting taxpayers money whilst he is renting out a house!
If he's not a benefit cheat thief then he's doing a bloody good impression of one. I'd have no problem 'grassing up' someone who is cheating the system and getting paid to sit on their backside whilst they're sitting on a pile of money in the form of bricks and mortar.

The system itself is corrupt, deserves to be cheated.

It becomes increasingly corrupt with that attitude.
I can't stand benefit cheats and anyone who is complicit with them by covering it up and helping them with their fraud. It makes a complete mockery of all the honst people who do a decent days work and just want to get by in life.

I do not intend to start an argument here. Please, focus on my question.

I doubt very much if he will tolerate a rent book or issue a meaningful receipt if he is trying to cover up a taxable cash trail.

I rent privately the landlord comes into my flat every week gives no notice, he gets cash from everyone else bar me.

I don't think he is declaring his taxes. I have reported him to HMRC no one here has a rent book. He has been doing this for years.

Why is it legal to be paid in cash?
