I've just finished my GCSE exams and I am now really nervous about the results, despite trying my best to put it out of my mind because I know that there is nothing I can do to make it any better or worse now. My problem is, in nearly all of my exams except for Mths I ran considerably out of time. At worst, I only got a quarter of the papers completed within the allotted time and at best only about half. I expected to have this problem, so I had practised repeatedly before entering the exam, but just found that due to the exam pressure I lost all sense of logic by writing far to much on the smaller mark questions. I have spoken to my Head of 6th form, who has said that they will accept me whatever my grades [she might change her mind when I get my results, but she is a really nice teacher, so I sincerly doubt it]. I am writing to ask if anyone knows of the inplications of having poor grades when applying to unviersities/getting a job etc. I have worked hard to ensure I had the neccesery knowledge, but I am very concerned about this. I feel that I have not achieved everything hat my teacher's were hoping for, so its quite disappointing to feel I have let them down after all their hard work! However, I did work hard to ensure I had the right amount of knowledge, so on the large part this isn't a problems [ apart from in the one or two subjects I'm not very good at]

Anyone else experienced something simular in their exams?

The exams i feared most with this sort of this were history and business case study and english. All long long essay qestions that need to be timed pretty well in order to write a healthy amount for each section.

I promised myself before the history exam that i'd leave myself a good 20 minutes for the long 12 marks question at the end, but no, i spent far too long on the least mark question. I ended up with half of what i wanted for the last question, thus, rushed it, had poor handwriting and probably didnt think as well as i could. In practise papers i still managed to pull off a B however which i was pleased about

To be honest with you mate when you apply to unis, they wont want to hear about the fact that even if you had poor timing in the exams hence got a low grade, they wont want ot hear that you know all the knowledge anyway, you really really have to show it in the exam itself, i cant stress this enough. You should be ok though, you seem smart, so fingers crossed for you.

..and remember, good can come out of everything, there are always 2nd chances.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of the worst case scenario when you say "at best, half the papers"? I think your mind is playing tricks on you; you've probably done alot better than you think. Don't worry about it, and if you get less than you need, you can always resit and redeem yourself in AS/A2 exams. If you do well in your AS and A2 exams, Unis will think, "Okay, he had a problem with his GCSEs but his AS results and his A2 predictions show a considerable improvement etc..." It's not nearly as bad as you think, but good luck! I'm off to watch more housemates [email protected] each other in BB!

I feel the same way, just try not to do a post-mortem of it, you can't change your results now, but hey, a nice thought, last year you only needed 45% for an A in Maths, so think what the pass mark's gonna be and you'll probs have done way better than you expected!

Lol, maybe it won't be quite as good this year (I couldn't believe the 45%!) but if everyone up and down the country found the papers difficult, the pass mark is lower...and anyways, you do tend to do better than expected, so just try to chill, not think about it, and if worst comes to worst, you can always retake. But you will probably have done fine anyway!

Thanks for your encouragement. Many of the papers were straightforward I thought; generally speaking the teachers had prepared us very well. When I said ''at best only half the papers'', what I meant was that I have had different timing experiences with different papers - some of them (such as RE) i only managed to complete one essay in the time which is max 20/80 marks, so I obviously wrote far too much and have got reason for concern. Universities do look at yourGCSEs because when you apply, you've only got GCSE results, AS results and predicted A-Level results. It's irratating because I'd practised and after many attemps actually managed to complete practise papers within the allotted time, so don't know what went wrong on the day! Chances of success are reduced considerably because I didn't finish, but I can't change it now, so it's just a matter of waiting and hoping for the best.

Im sure you will do alright, you generally do better than you think!
so it's just a matter of waiting and hoping for the best.
Exactly think positrively and you will be fine, im sure you will do great on the exams!
    Good luck

Don't worry, u'll be ok- nearly everyone i know ran out of time on the exams....and for subjects like RS you can still get a good grade without entirely finishing the paper (i got 61/63 on the mock without having finished the last question). My English exam was a disaster- i had 25 minutes left to write the last question and it sucks, but there's no point in worrying about it, i'm just gonna enjoy being on holiday!

no. i finished pretty much every exam ridiculously early and spent the rest of the time writing messages on the desks.

obviously your gcse results are going to have implications later on in life. for competitive university courses these results are used to differentiate between otherwise identical candidates for example. so that's a bummer.

after a exam back at GCSE's, i wrote pi to 60d.p. on the table in distinctive blue ink! when i did my physics A2 exam, this summer, i was allocated to that very same desk, and i thought, man its still there...what a freak i was back then, lol

For the RS mocks, I only answered questions A and B and my teacher said I was ontrack for an A* but I got a D.

JESUS! That's scary. Don't just put Maths in a thread without warning! :p:

Erm, to answer the question. Yes, I think I've underperformed considerably, especially in relation to my predicted grades (see sig) and Mock grades where I mostly got As and A*s and a couple of Bs. However, no, I am not worrying about the results. In fact, in all honesty, I've forgotten about the exams completely, aside from when I visit this forum! They might as well not exist for me. Does anybody else find that they seem to have eradicated themselves? Or am I weird?

I think ive underperformed compared to my mock but im not going to bother worrying about it.
In physics, chemistry and history I ran out of time (ESPECIALLY IN CHEMISTRY) so im a bit gutted but im just not going to worry

An hour to spare - wow, that's amazing! I didn't think Chemistry was too bad, but no surprises that I definiately thought Biology was the ost straightforward; it is byfar my strongest science, so I really worked on the Chemistry and Physics (and Biology1) during the revision time, so hopefully I will have shown some improvement since the mock exam, although still didn't quite finish the Chemistry this time.

If I had a few poor exams then I would just alter my choices, but because I've had time management problems problems with them all, it's more difficu;t (not helped by the fact I choose essay subjects like History, but I really enjoyed all my GCSE courses) and it's disappointing to see the finally come to an end.

Yes, I think I have underachieved in relation to my predicted grades. I think the earliest I finished an exam was about 15 minutes before the end.
