Musical snobs suck. How can you not like the Killers and still be sane?

What does popularity and reputation have to do with the way the music sounds and affects you?
    1. Unbelievably easily. It comes from having heard a lot of music that is much better.

    2. If all the fans are ********s, a) their live shows will suck and b) when you listen, you will be reminded of said ********s.

What is the point of reviews or even opinions if they don't influence our own? Just as if a lot of people I respect like something I will look at it more favourably, if a bunch of people I have no respect for like something I will be suspicious of it.

what do you think about interpol?
See my post on page one (further up)...

Ok, I've quoted it for ya;...

    Good thread.

Athlete - Liked a lot of their earlier, more quirky stuff. Including my favourite: "You Got the Style" from their first album. However, I think people throw unecessary sissy fits over their second album; "Tourist". It is a good album, and it pisses me off when everyone says they sound like Coldplay now. They do not! They're nowhere near as good as Coldplay. "Tourist" is a good album, I back this up by the fact that it stayed in the iTunes Top 10 Albums for a huge amount of time (in fact he may still be there). And cool people buy iTunes music! Favourite tracks include; "Tourist", "Wires", "Beautiful" and "Twentyfour Hours" from the second album. I love "Tourist". I have to say though, Joel's voice is really unique and is one of the main reasons why I like Athlete, however there are times, when his voice REALLY annoys me. Like on "Half-Light". So definitely a negative there. Overall Athlete are a good band, rather original I think, some great tracks, good voice...but occasionally very irritating. Not like Coldplay!

Interpol - Haven't heard a GREAT deal of their stuff, but what I have heard is amazing. I like "Specialist" and am in LOVE with "Evil". I think "Evil" is one of the best songs I have heard in a while. Love it. I really like their new one as well. I think Interpol are great. Big bashy drums, but the best thing is the individuality of the singer's voice. It's really low, and kind of enticing. I really do think the singer seals Interpol's success. Yeah, big thumbs up from me.

Oasis - I like a lot of their old stuff. Some great classic tracks, they've got to the point that their tracks are played at discos and are shoved on "Greatest Hits" CDs everywhere. They really do define the 90s I reckon. This means that some of their songs are a bit tainted, because they're so commercial, if that makes sense. Favourites include; "Live Forever", "Wonderwall", "So Sally Can Wait", "Little by Little", "Stop Crying Your Heart Out", and "Stand By Me". Their latest album is meant to be their best, but I wasn't too impressed with "Lyla". It seemed very repetitive and, um, bland. But I have to admit, it is a grower, but still, wasn't too impressive at all. Liam's voice grates me on it, and it's just, no, not a fan. In fact thinking of the chorus, it really annoys me. The video was crap too. So yeah, Oasis, a good band, but no, I'm by no means a hardcore fan. And it's Noel that pisses me off, not Liam. Noel is a great songwriter though. And "Live Forever" and "Wonderwall" are bloody good songs!! Amazing those two.

Coldplay - Bloody great band. One of my all time favourites, with Turin Brakes. I love Coldplay. Their first album was the best, which normally would suggest they're rather crap if their second two have been worst than the first. But "A Rush of Blood to the Head" and "X&Y" are still both amazing. "Parachutes" though, is a fantastic record. "Shiver" - one of my all time favourites, as is: "Spies"; all of them! "Parachutes" is one of those albums whereby EVERY SINGLE TRACK is amazing! The non-singles are even better than the releases themselves. "A Rush of Blood to the Head" was another great record. Stand outs for me include; "Green Eyes" (love that song), "Clocks", "The Scientist", "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face". I love the latest album too. "Square One", "What If", "Talk", "Low", "Fix You", "Swallowed in the Sea" are all great tracks. Funnily enough, I actually dislike "Speed of Sound" the most. "Fix You" is a great song though, probably the second single. Especially as it's been featured in "The OC" already. So yeah, Coldplay - ****ing great! Great live as well. I could go on for ages...

Razorlight - No, not a fan. Sorry. I really liked them when "Stumble and Fall" came out, and they were relatively unknown. I thought they showed great potential then, and that they'd turn out to be a really great band. I loved "Stumble and Fall", and I really thought that Razorlight, along with Billy Talent, would become two fav bands of mine. Not to be. "Golden Touch" or whatever it was was awful, and other stuff by them isn't too good. "Somewhere Else" was quite good with it's big and bashy drums, but I HATE the singer, Johnny. I would personally see to it that he was removed from this earth if I could; he's so gormless and just...urgh!! Get a hair wash, and cut it whilst you're at it, and shut your mouth! No...so no, not a Razorlight fan at all. Good first single, but think they're greatly overrated.

The Magic Numbers - Don't know enough to comment formally. Heard about one song, apparently they're up and coming. But don't sound too interesting to me.

Kaiser Chief - Quality band. "Unemployment" is a top notch record! And their releases have been excellent. I think they do something different from the Indie set that are swarming around at the moment. (Has Indie ever been so big?!). Kaiser Chiefs are cool. "Oh My God" is a fab record; comedy genius as well, I just really like it, I think it's fantastically original and individual. "I Predict A Riot" is a great song also. I love it, it's one of those tolerable long-term songs; I can never get sick of it, you just have to get up and throw yourself about to it! What a song. "Everyday I Love You Less and Less" is good too, a bit more commercial than the rest, and the keyboard grates after a while, but none the less still good, more pop-influenced I feel. The whole album's good though, I reckon they'll be around for a while. And after seeing them at Glastonbury and Live 8 Philly, they seem to be one of the best live acts around at the moment. So, yep. I have to say, has anyone else noticed they do that big shouty thing in the middle of ALL of their songs. They do a big; "AAAAAAAAAARGH!!". Yep, the House of Kaiser rocks!

Oh yeah, bloody fantastic. But they ain't in the thread title. One of the best bands around at the moment though, definitely. "Silent Alarm" is a class album. I'm going to see them live at the end of this year. I love "Banquet", "Helicopter", "Positive Tension", "This Modern Love", "Little Thoughts"...hell, I love 'em all.

I actually emailed Russ you know, just to say I thought they were all great. And he actually emailed me back! And I don't mean some random fan club administrator I mean Russ, himself! Chuffed! Twas very short though.

    Aaah, that's great.

They're going to be in London in October; and I'm debating over whether or not to buy tickets. I need to make up my mind soon though.

I just hate all the categorising that goes on- yes, I love Keane, I will admit it but I also like My Vitriol, The Smiths and a wide variety of different artists. I know nobody else who likes Keane but I ignore them because I like their songs, they are fantastic live (even my boyfriend who HATES them said they were very good live) and the atmosphere has always been great when I see them. They are one band who get so much more stick than they deserve because people treat them as if they are the devil sometimes, just because they don't have a guitar and they come from a good background. I'm not saying everyone should like them but I think people treat them in a very over the top way.
I can't let other people tell me what to like, thats what followers of the NME do- you read and then form your own opinion.

Agreed stop being musical snobs and only appreciating a band when they haven't been famous then once they're big turning round and saying i liked them when they were small but not they're soooooooooooooo commercial
I have a lot of friends who will only listen to music that is obsure and unknown to many whilst completely dismissing anything 'too commercial'...

It is true that some bands *cough* Athlete *cough* have become very non-descript since becomming more sucessful. The first album is fanatastic whilst thier most recent release is the same as everything else around.

Athlete - Brillian band, I always loved 'Oh, its getting hot in here.. there must be something in the atmosphere...' Heh, and Wires blew me away
Interpol - never heard a great lot of there songs., But what I have heard is pretty amazing.
Oasis - Classic albums behind them always loved there style, I didnt like Lola very much But i have been hearing there new single 'Importance of being Idle' and have totally fallen in love with it (Check out the vid - Rhys Ifans as a funeral director miming the song)
Coldplay - Great, I still loved parachutes and Rush of blood to the head mpore than there newer album. Not sure why but songs like The scientist and Yellow had something more to them.
Razorlight - Hmm Like some of there stuff, but not keen on others. strike me like there going to fadeaway soon.
The Magic Numbers - Love the original music style.
Kaiser Chiefs - Love 'I predict a riot' and other hits but there album dissapointed me.

Where is Bloc party? tut tut

    1. There may be better music out there but its still really good. It is possible to like more than one band (i have something like 40 different bands' albums, and hundreds of bands singles on my mp3 player).

    2. What gives you the impression all their fans are whatever the hell you called them? Just cos you don't like the band doesnt mean everyone who does is a tosser. I think you'd find yourself pretty lonely if you refused to talk to anyone who liked the killers.

    3. Reviews should influence but not make up your point of view. But still i dont think that the fanbase should have any effect on your own opinion of the music.

    Lots of anti-razorlight...

Why do so many people hate johnny borrel? he has charisma and theres nothing wrong with a bit of arrogance. All great frontmen have a bit of arrogance. look at liam, anthony kiedis..

i must admit taht on their album a lot of it is quite repetitive.
it will be interesting to hear the next album to see if they will make it different.

    but theyre wicked live

    Athlete Hmmm... kind of boring.

Interpol Interpol are a good band; nice to hear them being played more often during the day on the radio.

Oasis I think maybe they've had their day. The material they're bringing out now is good but not of the standard of their 90s stuff.

Coldplay Hugely overrated, I think. And they've ripped off Sigur Rós on the new album, which is a shame.

Razorlight I'm surprised to see so many negative comments about Razorlight; all of their singles have been strong and the album can be listened to all the way through.

The Magic Numbers Amazing band. After I bought the album, my dad heard it and got himself a copy hehehe.

Kaiser Chiefs Maybe one of the best bands in the charts at the moment. I wish I'd written some of their songs.
