Light-hearted comments yes (my brother started his by saying he had always wanted to be a pirate), lame jokes (first page of the thread) no. Make it interesting, not tedious.

I'm intrigued.... what degree could he possibly link to being a pirate?! marine biology maybe?!

Oh, he went on to say that, while his ambitions have subsequently changed somewhat (he was five when he first decided to turn to piracy), he liked to think that it showed his interest in travel, other cultures, literature, etc. from an early age. He was applying for foreign languages.

Putting jokes in your personal statement is not a good idea, it will make the reader unable to take you seriously from the start, which is not good, unless of course you're applying for clown school

A kid at my school applied for Maths and wished to write his entire PS in "code."

    He was advised against it..

they might not take you seriously?
your just wasting space on your PS since you dont have much to write about? :P
maybe it could make you stand out? seems a bit hit or miss... and bit risky since its meant to decide your future ._.

    In code?

Anyway, I know I'm not exactly the best source of advice, but I'd avoid jokes, perhaps some subtle humour (I thought an Siarach's ps intro was pretty amusing and worked quite well) wouldn't hurt.
