Most people already have the hpv virus anyway.

It's a bit like mononucleosis: it's not by avoiding people that do have it that you can't catch it since the virus remains dormant in most people.

Mouth ulcers aren't cold sores which are the HSV thingy. I was under the impression most mouth ulcers are just due to teeth/braces rubbing the mucosal layer - not so sure about the herpes thing.

Mouth ulcers are't contageous at all, they are caused by friction of your teeth on the inside of your mouth thats all! That why people with braces get them more often!

You can transfer mouth ulcers I'm sure.
One of my exes had very bad mouth ulcers and I got them almost the whole time we were dating and I very rarely get them normally.

Yep, Herpes-Simplex Virus. HSV1 generally causes cold sores and HSV2 generally causes genital herpes, but either can affect either region.
