Knocking/Clunking noise over bumps

No. If it were a wheelbearing it would be apparent at all roadspeeds no matter the level of the road surface.

Yes it's constant, over every speed bump or rough surface I always get the same sound. Even when cornering moderately hard over bumpy roads (Not a good idea, I know) I get the same sound. No difference regardless of speed, acceleration or deceleration. I will see if I can record a sound bite as it's fairly loud and easy to hear. Let me say one more time the car does still drive perfect with no loss in performance or anything.

It is constant, I would expect something in the transmission area as well. I don't think it is the suspension.

I really wouldnt be looking at transmission, big G.
First off a wheel bearing manifests itself as a cylic squeak rather than a clonk.
Seccond off, my MGB V8 has knacked prop UJ's and a serious amount of slop in the diff - the thrust washers have basically worn away after 140k miles. This manifests itself as a clonk when you initially take up drive. After that it's silent.

Its either suspension, something come loose or tools/crap in the boot.

Reply 22

Equally it could be a knackered CV Joint on the rear half shaft? But yeh, I think something loose is probably more likely, especially after maintenance.

I recorded these clips using my phone to give u an idea of the sound. i hope it's useful. Also sorry if i caused confusion before. the sound only appears over bumps, not all the time, so it's probably not a wheel bearing.

I haven't had a chance to look under the car yet, still waiting for my dad to get back from work so i can use the jack and axle stands.

P.S. Nothing in the boot anymore and all tools are secure.

Reply 24

Ok well I looked underneath, definitely nothing is loose. All stabilizer links are secure and everything else, bolts, etc are secure. I might need to take it to a garage for diagnosis.

Had a similar problem with mine, Made a clunking sound whenever I was slowing down quickly or going over bumps, turned out to be the CV joint. The clip to hold the boot in place had broken, which meant all the grease that was inside the boot had gone onto the surrounding parts and virtually dried out the CV joint, which isnt a good thing. A bit of grease and some cable ties should do the trick.

If its one of the Anti-Roll bar drop links, replace both of them at the same time instead, more cost effective and generally 'better' for the car

You know I'd really get those UJ's sorted out if I were you  What? A couple of hours work at most to take off the prop, knock out the old cups and spiders and fit new ones? Cheap parts too. We just did the diff end of the rear prop on the Landy as it had 5mm+ of play in one of the cup :eek3: Really didn't fancy a lump of propshaft flailing around under the car at 50mph, they'll punch a hole in anything in site.

Strangely the front diff has twice as much play as the rear but the rear howls like a tortured cat when you come off the power at speed and go through the deadzone.

OP don't be convinced that the sound is actually in the back, even if it sounds like it is. Sounds travel through the car's body and manifest themselves elsewhere. When the rear ARB bushes went mum insisted the clonk was coming from around the gearbox area.

Mine makes a rattling/scraping noise when going over speed bumps at any speed...... but only in the WET

its also an 09 fiesta...

Any ideas what this could be??

Less than a year old Fiesta? To the Dealership with you! It will be under warranty so get them to fix it.

No point on my car. It doesn't travel far at the moment as most of the time the roads are covered in salt and I've got a new prop and LSD axle wrapped up waiting to go on in the new year.

The weather has been too bad to do any more investigations. I will either take it to my dad's friends garage or wait till the weather gets better and get this sorted out. Its a pain in the ass. Hope nothing serious.

Reply 31

Turns out its either anti roll bar link or ARB itself. I will get the passenger side link replaced as the bushing looks really bad and the mechanic says thats likely the problem. At least it isn't too expensive, yet.

If you have any luck with Ford in finding this issue let me know...exact same issue with my 08 Renault Clio... been in the garage twice and they still can't fix it

Go to a different Renault garage?

Go to a different Renault garage?

Closest alternatives are 30 miles in all directions. That wouldn't be a problem if I knew they wouldn't charge £15 a day for a courtesy car.

Reply 36

Damn I changed the ARB Link and it made no difference at all :frown:

Also noticed the problem only happens when both wheels go over a bump at the same time. I.e. If only 1 side (left or right side tyres) goes over the bump I don't get the noise.

Did yours go into the garage in the end? Just got mine back, it turned out to be the antiroll bar bushes. They replaced them and the noise has stopped!

Reply 39

Did you get anywhere with this? I've got a similar problem with my 58 Ceed. The ball joints have been replaced, but the clunking is still just as bad
